Alfven waves in gallium

Low Temperature Physics, 1994
Alfvén-type magnetoplasma waves excited in high-purity gallium at a frequency 50–150 MHz in a magnetic field 10–35 kOe have been experimentally observed and investigated. The measured values of the Alfvén velocity are in good agreement with the results of its numerical calculations on the basis of Reed’s model for the electron spectrum of Ga with a ...

Parametric amplification of Alfven waves

Plasma Physics, 1977
The present analysis has been made to investigate the effects of finite resistivity on the amplification of low frequency plasma waves, e.g. an Alfven wave due to a time dependent modulating magnetic field. It is found that the bandwidth of frequencies for which amplification occurs increases due to finite resistivity.

Coronal heating through Alfven waves

Advances in Space Research, 2002
Sustaining the hot solar corona above polar regions, where the fast solar wind is accelerated, requires an energy flux of about 5 × 105 erg cm−2 s−1 whose source must be the photospheric motions below. The precise way this energy is transferred and damped remains an open question, though Alfven waves are the more natural candidates.

Parametric amplification of Alfven waves

Plasma Physics, 1972
Parametric excitation of Alfven waves was predicted by Montgomery and Harding (1966). They showed that torsional Alfven waves of frequency omega are excited in a magnetised plasma by sinusoidally perturbing the external magnetic field at a frequency of 2 omega .

Far-infrared Alfven waves in graphite

Journal of Physics: Condensed Matter, 1989
Alfven-wave propagation in single-crystal graphite has been studied at 4.2 K with wavelengths of 392.5, 433 and 512.5 mu m in magnetic fields up to 8.5 T applied along the c axis in the Faraday geometry. The mass density function obtained from the magnetic field dependence of interference maxima is in excellent agreement with the predicted value from ...

Four wave mixing of finite amplitude Alfven waves

International Conference on Plasma Science (papers in summary form only received), 1995
Summary form only given. Past treatments of coherent wave mixing of Alfven waves have generally been restricted to three wave interactions. This paper presents the first results that show that finite amplitude Alfven waves can also undergo four wave mixing.

Alfven waves in space plasmas

AIP Conference Proceedings, 1995
A brief review of time‐dependent theories of resonant mode coupling of Alfven waves in space plasmas is presented. A well behaved solution of the hydromagnetic wave equation for a general class of initial conditions is then discussed to understand the ringing, phase‐mixing, and variable eigenperiods of the field line oscillations in the magnetosphere ...
