Alfvén Waves

Science, 1962
We have described a set of laboratory experiments which establish the primary properties of Alfvén waves and have mentioned natural phenomena in which these waves exert a strong influence. To date, there have been few technological applications of Alfvén waves, although the waves are being considered for use in hydromagnetic amplifiers and in ...

Alfven waves and sunspot line profiles

Chinese Astronomy and Astrophysics, 1984
Abstract We investigate the effect of Alfven waves on the profile of the g = 0 lines FeI 5691.505 and FeI 5434.534. We find nonnegligible oscillation and distortion of the profile and vastly different lines. We calculate the theoretical profiles of these two lines under the action of Alfven waves, compare them with observations and hence verify ...

Alfven wave impedance studies on PRETEXT

AIP Conference Proceedings, 1985
Two quarter turn toroidal antennas are mounted in the midplane of the PRETEXT tokamak at the outer radius and located 180° apart toroidally. The currents in the antennas are run with relative phases of 0° and 180°. The tokamak is operated such that an extensive density scan is available on each shot.

Dispersive effects for Alfven surface waves

Plasma Physics, 1983
Non-dispersive Alfven surface waves at a plasma interface became dispersive when non-uniformities in the equilibrium are introduced.

RESISTIVITY INDEPENDENT ALFVEN WAVES DISSIPATION

1999
We present an explicit evidence, in the framework of 2-D MHD, of the existence of a stat in which energy is dissipated at a rate independent of the ohmic resistivity, thus proving the validity of a conjecture put forward more than twenty years ago, Matthaeus and Montgomery 1980.
