2D and 3D Nets by Self‐Assembly of Carbosilane Functionalized Polyphilic Liquid Crystals

In the shown compounds, the growing volume of the carbosilane side‐groups modifies the self‐assembly in liquid crystalline phases ranging from a square via a pentagonal to a hexagonal honeycomb and finally to a 3D (10,3)‐a double net. The structures are discussed in relation to inorganic solid‐state materials and the concept of “mesoatoms”.

Pyridine N‐oxides serve as photoinduced HAT catalysts to convert simple aldehydes into acyl radicals catalyzed by organophotocatalysts. Reacting these intermediates with alkynes opens aldehyde‐dependent pathways to densely functionalized pyrroles, substituted cyclopentanones, and indanones.
