Inheritance of leaf color in Allium fistulosum

open access: yesEngei Gakkai zasshi, 1971
The petiole color of Allium fistulosum cultivated in Japan is white. A mutant having red petiole was found in 1963. In the cross between red and white and the reciprocal, the F1 was red, and the F2 and F3 consisted of 3 red: 1 white (Table 1, 2). Red color in F1, F2 and F3 was much paler than that of the parent.

Multidimensional Perspective on the Quality of Green Onion: Between the Visible, the Measurable, and the Perceived

open access: yesFood Science &Nutrition, Volume 14, Issue 2, February 2026.
This graphical abstract presents a five‐phase framework to define green onion quality by integrating literature evidence, physicochemical and bioactive data, digital trends, field damage observations, and consumer perception, providing a multidimensional and measurable quality assessment.

Loss‐of‐Function Mutation in CER2‐LIKE1 Reduced Accumulation of Cuticular Wax and Susceptibility to Thrips in Welsh Onion

open access: yesPlant Biotechnology Journal, Volume 24, Issue 2, Page 871-883, February 2026.
ABSTRACT Cuticular waxes can form a hydrophobic barrier on aerial plant surfaces, which is essential for mediating plant‐environment interactions by providing protection against both biotic and abiotic stresses. In this study, a cuticular wax mutant (gl) was identified and characterised in Welsh onion (Allium fistulosum L.), exhibiting a functional ...

Memory in the wall: expanding our understanding of the roles of plant cell walls

open access: yesNew Phytologist, Volume 249, Issue 1, Page 56-72, January 2026.
Summary The plant cell wall, while providing mechanical support to cells, also dynamically adjusts its composition and structure in response to cellular and environmental cues. Recent findings indicate that plants exposed to cold stress alter the composition of cell wall polysaccharides and that this altered status primes the plants to overcome future,

Lemongrass (Cymbopogon citratus) Extracts Ameliorate Polycystic Ovary Syndrome in Rats by Inhibiting Follicular Atresia and Modulating Ghrelin and Leptin

open access: yesBiochemistry Research International, Volume 2026, Issue 1, 2026.
Polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) accelerates ovarian follicular depletion through atresia. This study investigated the therapeutic potential of aqueous (AE) and hydroethanolic (HEE) extracts of Cymbopogon citratus in mitigating PCOS‐induced ovarian damage (specifically ferroptosis, apoptosis, and oxidative stress) in a rat model of PCOS.

Bioactive phytochemicals and health-promoting effects of green onion (Allium fistulosum L.): a scoping review

open access: yesJournal of Ethnic Foods
As interest in health functional foods increases, research on plant-derived bioactive raw materials has expanded. Among Allium species, Allium fistulosum L. (green onion) remains relatively underexplored compared with Allium sativum L.

Hepatoprotective Effects of Cipollotto Nocerino Leaf Extract in HepG2 Cells: SIRT1‐Mediated Regulation of Lipid Metabolism and Oxidative Stress

open access: yesJournal of Food Biochemistry, Volume 2026, Issue 1, 2026.
Cipollotto Nocerino (Allium cepa L.), a Protected Designation of Origin (PDO) spring onion from the Campania region (Southern Italy), yields leaves that are a neglected agri‐food by‐product, typically discarded despite their rich phytochemical profile, and remain largely unexplored, particularly regarding their potential to counteract hepatic steatosis.
