The Sapogenins of Allium porrum L.

Journal of Agricultural and Food Chemistry, 1998
A chemical study of the sapogenin content has been conducted on leek, A. porrum L., sown and collected at different times. As a result of this investigation, a variability in the sapogenin composition depending from the climate was observed. In addition, a novel sapogenin named porrigenin C (1a), and its 25S epimer (1b) have been isolated, together ...

Cytotoxic Saponins from Bulbs of Allium porrum L.

Journal of Agricultural and Food Chemistry, 2000
An extensive phytochemical analysis of the saponin content has been undertaken on leek, Allium porrum L., sown and collected at different seasons. As a result of this investigation, eight saponins (1-8) have been isolated, four of them (5-8) being novel compounds.

Germination and B Chromosomes in Allium porrum L.

Journal of Plant Physiology, 1985
Summary The effect of B chromosomes upon germination time was investigated in a single cultivar of leek seeds ( Allium porrum L., cultivar Musselburgh). Seeds with Bs germinated approximately 1 day earlier than seeds without Bs but differences in percentage cumulative germination were significant on one day only.

Inhibition of Some Rot Fungi Polygalacturonases by Allium cepa L. and Allium porrum L. Extracts

Journal of Phytopathology, 1993
AbstractExtracts of Allium cepa and A. porrum‐ contain factors that inhibit to various extents polygalacturonases (PGs) produced in vitro by Sclerotinia sclerotiorum, Botrytis cinerea, Fusarium moniliforme, Phoma terrestris, Sclerotium cepivorum, Macrophomina phaseolina, Didymella bryoniae andPhoma lycopersici. The PG inhibition rank changed using leek

Hypolipidemic Activity ofAllium porrumL. in Cholesterol-Fed Rabbits

Journal of Medicinal Food, 2006
Allium porrum L. is a herbaceous plant from the Liliaceae family and has been widely used in Persian foods as a flavor component and in Iranian traditional medicine as an anti-atherogenic remedy. The present investigation was undertaken to evaluate the antihypercholesterolemic effect of a hydroalcoholic extract of A. porrum L. bulbs.

Root apical meristems of arbuscular mycorrhizae of Allium porrum L.

Environmental and Experimental Botany, 1994
Abstract The apices of adventitious roots of leek plants have an open meristem with a quiescent centre localized at the pole of the stele. Mycorrhizal apices do not change in structure with respect to those of uninfected apices but increase drastically in size under the growth conditions in the present study.

Spirostanol saponins of Allium porrum L.

Phytochemistry, 1999
An investigation of the extracts from bulbs of Allium porrum L. has led to the isolation of four spirostanol saponins. Two of them are new compounds and have been identified as: (25R)-5 alpha-spirostan-3 beta, 6 beta-diol 3-O-{O-beta-D-glucopyranosyl-(1-->2)-O-[beta-D-xylopyranosyl-(1-->3)]-O- beta -D-glucopyranosyl-(1-->4)-beta-D-galactopyranoside} (3)
