Changes in photosynthesis and grazing facilitate growth of a mixotrophic protist under ocean acidification and warming

open access: yesNew Phytologist, Volume 251, Issue 5, Page 2574-2587, September 2026.
Grazing rates of Ochromonas CCMP2951 expressed as carbon obtained per mean cell volume (a) and Caut/het‐photosynthetically fixed carbon divided by carbon obtained through grazing (b) in the four experimental treatments. Summary Mixotrophic protists capable of both photosynthesis and phagotrophy are key members of marine plankton communities.

Upcycling Spent LiCoO2 Cathodes via Surface Spinel Reconstruction for Efficient Furfural Hydrogenation

open access: yesChemSusChem, Volume 19, Issue 16, 27 August 2026.
Spent LiCoO2 batteries (LCO) are directly upcycled into efficient Co‐based catalysts via surface spinel reconstruction, turning waste into function. A minor spinel‐like phase enhances reducibility and drives selective hydrogenation of furfural to furfuryl alcohol or tetrahydrofurfuryl alcohol, offering tunable selectivity and simple regeneration. Spent

Cooperative Redox Catalysis of N2O Decomposition by Short‐Range RhOx and CeOx Anchored to Co3O4

open access: yesAngewandte Chemie International Edition, Volume 65, Issue 34, 17 August 2026.
A short‐range Rh–O–Co–O–Ce interfacial moiety drives low‐temperature N2O decomposition via a cooperative redox cycle. Operando modulated‐excitation XAS with phase‐sensitive detection (ME‐XAS + PSD) tracks rapid, reversible Rh oxidation coupled to Co reduction.

Acid Sulfite Pulping of Hemp: Effects of Processing Conditions on Lyocell Pulp Quality

open access: yesJournal of Polymer Science, Volume 64, Issue 16, Page 3364-3381, 15 August 2026.
Industrial hemp is emerging as a promising renewable source for next‐generation textile fibers. This study evaluates whether acid sulfite pulping can produce hemp‐based dissolving pulp suitable for lyocell manufacturing. While the process is historically linked to increased cellulose accessibility, it did not achieve the low lignin content and ...
