Cytotoxicity of amalgams, alloys, and their elements and phases
Dental Materials, 1991The purpose of this study was to compare the relative cytotoxicity of amalgams, alloys, and their constituent elements and phases, by means of a rapid and sensitive in vitro cell culture test. Pure copper and zinc showed intensive cytotoxicity, significantly greater than that of pure silver and mercury. Pure tin was non-cytotoxic.

Mechanically driven alloying of immiscible elements
Physical Review Letters, 1992We report on the formation by mechanical alloying of fcc solid solution of Fe and Cu, which are immiscible. Intense codeformation of Cu with Fe and other high-melting bcc metals generates small fragments with tip radii of the order 1 nm such that capillary pressures force the atoms on these fragments to dissolve.
