Colorimetric Determination of Allyl Isothiocyanate
Analytical Letters, 1983Abstract A simple and accurate colorimetric method for determination of allyl isothiocyanate was developed. It involves formation of methylene blue by the reaction of an acid solution of N, N-dimethyl-p-phenylenediamine in the presence of ferric ion with the sulfide liberated by ethanolic base hydrolysis of allyl isothiocyanate in xylene.

Allyl Isothiocyanate Induces DNA Damage and Impairs DNA Repair in Human Breast Cancer MCF-7 Cells
Anticancer Research, 2021Background/Aim: Ally lisothiocyanate (AITC), a constituent of naturally occurring isothiocyanates (ITCs) found in some Brassica vegetables, has been previously demonstrated to have anti-carcinogenic activity.

Allyl isothiocyanate sensitizes TRPV1 to heat stimulation
Pflügers Archiv - European Journal of Physiology, 2013The powerful plant-derived irritant allyl isothiocyanate (AITC, aka mustard oil) induces hyperalgesia to heat in rodents and humans through mechanisms that are not yet fully understood. It is generally believed that AITC activates the broadly tuned chemosensory cation channel transient receptor potential cation channel subfamily A member 1 (TRPA1 ...

Allyl isothiocyanate is mutagenic in Salmonella typhimurium
Mutation Research/Genetic Toxicology, 1985Allyl isothiocyanate, a naturally occurring compound, component of oil of mustard and human food plants such as cabbage, cauliflower and horseradish, has up to now been regarded as nonmutagenic in bacterial mutagenicity testing systems. Recently, however, it was found to cause transitional-cell papillomas in the urinary bladder of male F344 rats ...

Inhibitory Effect of Allyl Isothiocyanate on Platelet Aggregation
Journal of Agricultural and Food Chemistry, 2014Allyl isothiocyanate (AITC) is one of the major components of mustard. The present study for the first time attempted to evaluate the effect of AITC on platelet aggregation. In the in vitro study using platelet-rich plasma (PRP) from rats and humans, AITC at concentrations of 100 and 300 μM significantly inhibited platelet aggregation induced by ...

The bactericidal effects of allyl isothiocyanate in water
Environmental Technology, 2012This study investigated the potential application of allyl isothiocyanate (AITC) for the disinfection of water by examining the bactericidal effects of this compound against inoculated Escherichia coli in autoclaved, de-chlorinated tap water and against the natural microbiota (heterotrophic plate count bacteria, HPCs) in a surface water. Bacteriostatic

Thermal Degradation of Allyl Isothiocyanate in Aqueous Solution
Journal of Agricultural and Food Chemistry, 1998Allyl isothiocyanate in an aqueous solution was heated and refluxed at 100 degrees C for 1 h. The reaction mixtures were then extracted with methylene chloride and analyzed using gas chromatography (GC) and gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS).

Allyl Isothiocyanate Ameliorates Obesity by Inhibiting Galectin‐12
Molecular Nutrition & Food Research, 2018ScopeThe aim of this study is to investigate the signaling pathways by which allyl isothiocyanate (AITC) reduces adipocyte differentiation and the efficacy of AITC in suppressing galectin‐12 levels as a therapeutic for high fat diet (HFD)‐induced obesity. Methods and resultsAITC presents anti‐adipogenic effects on 3T3‐L1 cells by decreasing lipid ...
