Evaluation of Reinforced Slope Dynamics Using ALOS-2/PALSAR-2

IGARSS 2019 - 2019 IEEE International Geoscience and Remote Sensing Symposium, 2019
Reinforced slope dynamics can be studied using the synthetic aperture radar (SAR) backscattering analysis. This study provides the results of the InSAR analysis obtained from the reinforced slope monitoring by ALOS-2/PALSAR- 2. The vertical displacement values from the GEONET and the Line-of-Sight InSAR analysis have been compared.

Pixel-Based Deforestation Detection Algorithm for ALOS-2/PALSAR-2

IGARSS 2019 - 2019 IEEE International Geoscience and Remote Sensing Symposium, 2019
In order to reduce speckle noise effects in forest cover change analysis, two types of SAR processing approach have been proposed so far. One is a type of object-based segmentation approaches and another is pixel-based processing approaches using speckle noise filtering such as Lee and Frost filter.

Change Detection in Bi-Temporal Alos-2 Palsar-2 Polarimetric Data

IGARSS 2020 - 2020 IEEE International Geoscience and Remote Sensing Symposium, 2020
This paper examines two test statistics, namely, likelihood ratio statistic and Roy's largest eigenvalue, for detecting changes in multi-look bi-temporal ALOS-2 PALSAR-2 fully polarimetric data. The latter turns into the well-known intensity ratio when applying to single-polarization data.

Emergency observation and disaster monitoring performed by ALOS-2 PALSAR-2

2016 IEEE International Geoscience and Remote Sensing Symposium (IGARSS), 2016
One of the main missions of the Advanced Land Observing Satellite-2 (ALOS-2, “DAICHI-2” ) is the disaster monitoring. Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency (JAXA) has operated the emergency observation more than hundred times in 2015. Not only the most important event in 2015, the Mw 7.8 Gorkha earthquake on April 25, the Phased Array type L-band ...

Radio frequency interference in ALOS-2 PALSAR-2 interferogram

2017 XXXIInd General Assembly and Scientific Symposium of the International Union of Radio Science (URSI GASS), 2017
In this paper, a Radio frequency interference (RFI) in ALOS-2 PALSAR-2 interferogram is discussed. L-band synthetic aperture radar (SAR) systems share the band with global navigation satellite systems (GNSS), communication systems and aircraft surveillance radars, resulting in severe effect of RFIs.

Mapping of Peatland Drainage Canals in Indonesia Using Polarization Data of ALOS-2 PALSAR-2

2021 IEEE International Geoscience and Remote Sensing Symposium IGARSS, 2021
The drained peatland is a typical anthropogenic disturbance for carbon dioxide emissions in tropical peatlands of Indonesia, decreasing the groundwater table and activating the decomposition of peat soil. Especially in Indonesia, drainages have purposes for converting it to oil palm plantation and it potentially induces more fire events in peatlands ...

Peatland Carbon Emissions Estimates by ALOS-2 PALSAR-2 Interferometry in Borneo

IGARSS 2019 - 2019 IEEE International Geoscience and Remote Sensing Symposium, 2019
Carbon emissions from peatland significantly affect climate change. We adopted SAR interferometry technique in order to estimate the amount of carbon emissions from peatland receiving development pressure in Borneo. As a result, ground subsidence of 15.0 cm yr-1 on average and 31.0 cm yr-1 at maximum were observed.

Results of ALOS-2 PALSAR-2 Calibration and Validation After 3 Years of Operation

IGARSS 2018 - 2018 IEEE International Geoscience and Remote Sensing Symposium, 2018
This paper reports the result of over 3 years routine calibration and validation works for the Phased Array type L-band Synthetic Aperture Radar-2 (P ALSAR-2) onboard the Advanced Land Observing Satellite-2 (ALOS-2). The major observation modes and beams were evaluated, and we confirmed that the PALSAR-2 product satisfy its specification over 3 years ...

Estimation of phase noise by time series analysis of ALOS-2 PALSAR-2 data

2017 IEEE International Geoscience and Remote Sensing Symposium (IGARSS), 2017
PALSAR-2 on ALOS-2 developed by JAXA, is a follow-on L-band SAR sensor from PALSAR on ALOS. The mission objectives defined by JAXA include contribution to disaster monitoring. To establish the methodology to acquire the damaged area for disaster monitoring, we need to improve our understanding of the relationships between the sensor parameters (e.g ...

Combining polarimetric sentinel-1 and ALOS-2/PALSAR-2 imagery for mapping of flooded vegetation

2017 IEEE International Geoscience and Remote Sensing Symposium (IGARSS), 2017
This article presents a semi-automated methodology for mapping of flooded areas with a special focus on flooded vegetation based on polarimetric Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) data. C-band SAR data is well suited for mapping of open water areas, while L-band enables the extraction of detailed information of flooded vegetation.
