A short route to alpha-tocopherol.
Angewandte Chemie (International ed. in English), 2008A simple and practical route to alpha-tocopherol (I) is described. The key step is a remarkably diastereoselective domino aldol/oxa-Michael reaction, which is promoted by a proline deriv.

ALPHA-TOCOPHEROL AND ALPHA-TOCOPHEROL PHOSPHATE IN THE PROPHYLAXIS OF THROMBOEMBOLISM
Archives of Surgery, 1953IN THE first seven months of 1949, thromboembolic disease developed postoperatively in nine patients in the surgical service of the Snyder-Jones Clinic, Winfield, Kan., and two of these nine patients died with pulmonary embolism. During the summer of 1949, we learned of the work later reported by Ochsner, DeBakey, and DeCamp, and by Kay and his co ...

Free radicals vary widely in their thermodynamic properties, ranging from very oxidizing to very reducing. These thermodynamic properties can be used to predict a pecking order, or hierarchy, for free radical reactions.

AbstractBackground: Vitamins A and E are recognisably important in the initial stages of life, and the newborn depends on nutritional adequacy of breast milk to meet their needs. These vitamins share routes of transport to the tissues and antagonistic effects have been observed in animals after supplementation with vitamin A. The present study aimed to

This paper describes a rapid, microprocedure for the simultaneous determination of alpha-tocopherol (vitamin E) and retinol (vitamin A) in plasma, and of alpha-tocopherol alone in red cells since cells do not contain retinol. A total lipid extract from 0.

Alpha‐Tocopherol and Cardiac Toxicity of Iron
Scandinavian Journal of Haematology, 1981At the onset of disturbances of cardiac rhythm after a 7th injection of iron sorbitol to a patient with severe malabsorption syndrome an extremely low level of alpha‐tocopherol in serum – 0.04 mg per 100 ml serum – was observed. The clinical manifestations are interpreted as a possible consequence of the depletion of the vitamin, a natural scavenger of

Vitamin E is composed of closely related compounds, including tocopherols and tocotrienols. Studies of the last decade provide strong support for a specific role of alpha-tocopherol in cell signalling and the regulation of gene expression.

The Effect Of Alpha-Tocopherol On Urokinase [PDF]
Alpha-tocopherol (vitamin E) in the form of its succinate markedly inhibited the activity of urokinase (5 CTA u/ml) on fibrin plates when tested at a concentration of 10-5m . The amidolytic (S-2444) and esterase (N-α-acetylglycyl-L-lysine methyl ester) activities of urokinase were also inhibited by α-tocopherol.
