Structural insights into lacto‐N‐biose I recognition by a family 32 carbohydrate‐binding module from Bifidobacterium bifidum

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Bifidobacterium bifidum establishes symbiosis with infants by metabolizing lacto‐N‐biose I (LNB) from human milk oligosaccharides (HMOs). The extracellular multidomain enzyme LnbB drives this process, releasing LNB via its catalytic glycoside hydrolase family 20 (GH20) lacto‐N‐biosidase domain.

Introduction: Trying to Define Literature’s Confluences

open access: yesÉtudes Britanniques Contemporaines, 2017
Previous issues of Études britanniques contemporaines chose to focus on the agonistic dynamics of British literature and the arts. The present issue explores a paradigm which has hitherto received very little critical attention. The notion of ‘confluence’

The role and implications of mammalian cellular circadian entrainment

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
At their most fundamental level, mammalian circadian rhythms occur inside every individual cell. To tell the correct time, cells must align (or ‘entrain’) their circadian rhythm to the external environment. In this review, we highlight how cells entrain to the major circadian cues of light, feeding and temperature, and the implications this has for our

Exposures: Humour and Vulnerability in some Contemporary British Novels

open access: yesÉtudes Britanniques Contemporaines, 2016
Some of the most hilarious novels of the last decades begin in gravitas or generate moments of high punctum. This article investigates the ways in which, in contemporary texts, a specific use of humour reverses the logics of comic relief to generate an ...

Molecular bases of circadian magnesium rhythms across eukaryotes

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Circadian rhythms in intracellular [Mg2+] exist across eukaryotic kingdoms. Central roles for Mg2+ in metabolism suggest that Mg2+ rhythms could regulate daily cellular energy and metabolism. In this Perspective paper, we propose that ancestral prokaryotic transport proteins could be responsible for mediating Mg2+ rhythms and posit a feedback model ...

Translating Woolf’s Essays: Reflections on an Experience of Polyvocal Writing

open access: yesÉtudes Britanniques Contemporaines, 2015
This article focuses on what translating Virginia Woolf’s texts reveals of her writerly practice. It aims at showing how translation is that ‘experience of the other’ Antoine Berman refers to, and above all how it may become a hermeneutic tool unveiling ...

Peptide‐based ligand antagonists block a Vibrio cholerae adhesin

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
The structure of a peptide‐binding domain of the Vibrio cholerae adhesin FrhA was solved by X‐ray crystallography, revealing how the inhibitory peptide AGYTD binds tightly at its Ca2+‐coordinated pocket. Structure‐guided design incorporating D‐amino acids enhanced binding affinity, providing a foundation for developing anti‐adhesion therapeutics ...
