Fog, Symbiosis, and Survival: The Ecological Architecture of the Grit Crust From the Atacama Desert Represents a Lichen Holobiome Rather Than a Soil Microbiome

open access: yesEnvironmental Microbiology, Volume 28, Issue 6, June 2026.
Multi‐marker metabarcoding (16S rRNA, 18S rRNA, ITS2) of the fog‐dependent grit crust in the Atacama Desert reveals a community structured by lichen symbioses rather than typical soil‐derived microbial assemblages. The green algal photobiont Trebouxia dominates the eukaryotic community, accompanied by lichenized Caliciales and lichen‐associated ...

Restyling Alternaria

open access: yes
The omnipresent dematiaceous hyphomycete genus Alternaria is associated with a wide variety of substrates including seeds, plants, agricultural products, humans, soil and even the atmosphere. It includes saprophytic, endophytic and pathogenic species, among which multiple plant pathogens, post-harvest pathogens, and human pathogens (causative agents of

bZIP Transcription Factor PobZIP8 Positively Mediates Heat Stress Tolerance and Negatively Regulates the Growth and Development of Pleurotus ostreatus

open access: yesMicrobial Biotechnology, Volume 19, Issue 6, June 2026.
PobZIP8 from Pleurotus ostreatus enhances heat stress tolerance while negatively regulating fruiting body development, providing a key target for genetic improvement of edible fungi. ABSTRACT Pleurotus ostreatus is a globally cultivated edible and medicinal fungus, but its growth and yield are significantly affected by heat stress during cultivation ...

Facial cutaneous phaeohyphomycosis in an immunocompetent individual

open access: yesIndian Journal of Pathology and Microbiology
Fungal infection is a rare condition in immunocompetent individuals, and it is associated with high rates of morbidity and mortality. We report on a case of cutaneous phaeohyphomycosis in healthy 25-year-old man.

Exploring the Antifungal Potential of the Brown Macroalga Hormophysa triquetra: Morphological Disruptions and Structural Changes in Plant Pathogens

open access: yesEnvironmental Microbiology Reports, Volume 18, Issue 3, June 2026.
Extracts of Hormophysa triquetra showed antifungal activity with marked hyphal deformities in Fusarium oxysporum and Alternaria alternata. Light microscopy and SEM confirmed structural alterations despite unchanged radial growth. Cucumber assays validated reduced disease incidence, linked to fatty‐acid–rich metabolites detected by GC–MS.
