Mycobacterial cell division arrest and smooth‐to‐rough envelope transition using CRISPRi‐mediated genetic repression systems

open access: yesFEBS Open Bio, EarlyView.
CRISPRI‐mediated gene silencing and phenotypic exploration in nontuberculous mycobacteria. In this Research Protocol, we describe approaches to control, monitor, and quantitatively assess CRISPRI‐mediated gene silencing in M. smegmatis and M. abscessus model organisms.

Differential regulation of ZFAS1 splice variants by endoplasmic reticulum stress in hepatocyte cell lines

open access: yesFEBS Open Bio, EarlyView.
ZFAS1 is a lncRNA promoting cell proliferation and migration, exhibiting high expression in various cancers. It is conserved, widely expressed, and produces multiple splice variants with unclear roles. We identified several splice variants in hepatocyte models, and found that inhibiting or suppressing regulators of the unfolded protein response (PERK ...

Host-Range Evolution: Adaptation and Trade-Offs in Fitness of Mites on Alternative Hosts [PDF]

open access: yesEcology, 2000
Trade-offs in fitness on different host plants has been a central hypothesis in explaining the evolutionary specialization of herbivores. Surprisingly, only a few studies have documented such trade-offs. In this paper, I present results from a selection experiment that demonstrates trade-offs in host plant use for a polyphagous spider mite.

HIV‐1 establishes immediate latency in T cells expressing the viral Nef protein

open access: yesFEBS Open Bio, EarlyView.
Nef is a viral protein often omitted from HIV‐1 reporter viruses. Consequently, its role in viral latency is unclear. We developed three novel dual reporter HIV‐1 derivatives that express Nef and allow for detection of latent and productive infection. Using these reporters, we show that Nef does not affect the establishment of immediate viral latency ...

Biology and Demographic Statistics of Spodoptera frugiperda on Corn (Zea mays L.) and Spinach (Amaranthus hybridus L.)

open access: yesJTPP: Journal of Tropical Plant Protection
Spodoptera frugiperda J.E. Smith (Lepidoptera: Noctuidae) is an invasive pest originally from Central America. The S. frugiperda attack was first documented in Indonesia in 2019. Due to its voracious feeding habits, S. frugiperda can lead to significant

Promiscuous stimulation of HSP70 ATPase activity by parasite‐derived J‐domains

open access: yesFEBS Open Bio, EarlyView.
The malaria parasite Plasmodium falciparum exports three highly homologous yet functionally divergent J‐domain proteins into human erythrocytes. Here, we show that J‐domains isolated from all three proteins effectively stimulate the ATPase activity of both endogenous host and exported parasite HSP70 chaperones.

Potential of Essential Oils from Cymbopogon winterianus Jowitt: Promising Evaluation for the Control of Mollusks and Embryos of Biomphalaria glabrata and Schistosoma mansoni Cercariae

open access: yesPharmaceuticals
Background/objectives: Schistosomiasis is a parasitic disease that represents a serious public health problem. An alternative for the control of snails, intermediate hosts of schistosomiasis, is the use of molluskicides.
