Evolutionary Reversals During Viral Adaptation to Alternating Hosts [PDF]

open access: yesGenetics, 2000
AbstractExperimental adaptation of the bacteriophage ϕX174 to a Salmonella host depressed its ability to grow on the traditional Escherichia host, whereas adaptation to Escherichia did not appreciably affect growth on Salmonella. Continued host switching consistently exhibited this pattern.

Survey and examination of the potential alternative hosts of Villosiclava virens, the pathogen of rice false smut, in China

open access: yesJournal of Integrative Agriculture, 2015
Rice false smut is caused by ascomycete Villosiclava virens, whose potential alternative hosts have been assumed previously. Here its potential alternative hosts were surveyed and identified from 2008 to 2013 in the main rice-growing regions in China ...

Goats as alternative hosts of cattle ticks

open access: yesOnderstepoort J Vet Res, 2007
The objective of this study was to compare the presence on goats and cattle of adult ticks that usually infest cattle. To this end ticks collected from sets of five goats were compared with those collected from sets of five cattle at 72 communal dip-tanks in the eastern region of the Eastern Cape Province. Amblyomma hebraeum was present on goats at

Physiological Age Status of Female Adults and Off-Season Survival of Rice Leaffolder Cnaphalocrocis medinalis in India

open access: yesRice Science, 2015
Rice leaffolder, Cnaphalocrocis medinalis, is one of the major foliage feeders found in the rice growing regions in India. When the crop was at maturity, numerous adults of rice leaffolder were found in the rice fields though the larval population ...

Correction for founder effects in host-viral association studies via principal components [PDF]

open access: yes, 2012
Viruses such as HIV and Hepatitis C (HCV) replicate rapidly and with high transcription error rates, which may facilitate their escape from immune detection through the encoding of mutations at key positions within human leukocyte antigen (HLA)-specific ...

The host galaxy and late-time evolution of the Super-Luminous Supernova PTF12dam [PDF]

open access: yes, 2015
Super-luminous supernovae of type Ic have a tendency to occur in faint host galaxies which are likely to have low mass and low metallicity. PTF12dam is one of the closest and best studied super-luminous explosions that has a broad and slowly fading ...

Determination of an Interaction Network between an Extracellular Bacterial Pathogen and the Human Host [PDF]

open access: yes, 2019
A major gap in understanding infectious diseases is the lack of information about molecular interaction networks between pathogens and the human host.

Reaction of Five Non-cereal Grasses to Five Races and Two Host Selective Toxins of Pyrenophora tritici-repentis

open access: yesThe Plant Pathology Journal, 2015
Alternative hosts increase the difficulty of disease management in crops because these alternate hosts provide additional sources of primary inoculum or refuges for diversity in the pathogen gene pool.

Host density and competency determine the effects of host diversity on trematode parasite infection. [PDF]

open access: yesPLoS ONE, 2014
Variation in host species composition can dramatically alter parasite transmission in natural communities. Whether diverse host communities dilute or amplify parasite transmission is thought to depend critically on species traits, particularly on how ...

Biological characteristics of Trichogramma pretiosum and Trichogramma acacioi (Hym.: Trichogrammatidae), parasitoids of the avocado defoliator Nipteria panacea (Lep.: Geometridae), on eggs of Anagasta kuehniella (Lep.: Pyralidae)

open access: yesBrazilian Archives of Biology and Technology, 2005
The objective of this investigation was to study Trichogramma pretiosum and T. acacioi (Hymenoptera: Trichogrammatidae), parasitoids of the avocado defoliator Nipteria panacea (Lepidoptera: Geometridae) on the eggs of the alternative host Anagasta ...
