Tetrahymena: an alternative model host for evaluating virulence of Aeromonas strains. [PDF]

open access: yesPLoS ONE, 2012
An easier assessment model would be helpful for high-throughput screening of Aeromonas virulence. The previous study indicated the potential of Tetrahymena as a permissive model to examine virulence of Aeromonas hydrophila.

Bridging the gap? Corruption, knowledge and foreign ownership [PDF]

open access: yes, 2010
We argue that in addition to host corruption per se, as accounted for by the existing literature, an explanation of inter-country variation in FDI needs to account for the distance between the host and home corruption, which we call relative corruption.

The short GRB070707 afterglow and its very faint host galaxy

open access: yes, 2008
We present the results from an ESO/VLT campaign aimed at studying the afterglow properties of the short/hard gamma ray burst GRB 070707. Observations were carried out at ten different epochs from ~0.5 to ~80 days after the event. The optical flux decayed

Entry pathways of herpes simplex virus type 1 into human keratinocytes are dynamin- and cholesterol-dependent [PDF]

open access: yes, 2011
Herpes simplex virus type 1 (HSV-1) can enter cells via endocytic pathways or direct fusion at the plasma membrane depending on the cell line and receptor(s).

Hematopoietic (stem) cells—The elixir of life?

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
The aging of HSCs (hematopoietic stem cells) and the blood system leads to the decline of other organs. Rejuvenating aged HSCs improves the function of the blood system, slowing the aging of the heart, kidney, brain, and liver, and the occurrence of age‐related diseases.

Seeds of weeds as an alternative host of phytopathogens

open access: yesArquivos do Instituto Biológico, 2018
: Weeds compete with agricultural crops for water, light, nutrients and space, besides having an extensive seed bank. However, another aspect to be considered relates to few studies pointing out weeds as hosts of phytopathogenic fungi.

Phosphatidylinositol 4‐kinase as a target of pathogens—friend or foe?

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
This graphical summary illustrates the roles of phosphatidylinositol 4‐kinases (PI4Ks). PI4Ks regulate key cellular processes and can be hijacked by pathogens, such as viruses, bacteria and parasites, to support their intracellular replication. Their dual role as essential host enzymes and pathogen cofactors makes them promising drug targets.

Neutralizing Antibody-Resistant Hepatitis C Virus Cell-to-Cell Transmission [PDF]

open access: yes, 2010
Hepatitis C virus (HCV) can initiate infection by cell-free particle and cell-cell contact-dependent transmission. In this study we use a novel infectious coculture system to examine these alternative modes of infection.

transmission of the Ambystoma tigrinum virus to alternative hosts [PDF]

open access: yesDiseases of Aquatic Organisms, 2001
Ambystoma tigrinum virus (ATV) is a lethal virus originally isolated from Sonora tiger salamanders Ambystoma tigrinum stebbinsi in the San Rafael Valley in southern Arizona. USA. ATV is implicated in several salamander epizootics. We attempted to transmit ATV experimentally to fish and amphibians by injection, water bath exposure, or feeding to test ...

Peptide‐based ligand antagonists block a Vibrio cholerae adhesin

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
The structure of a peptide‐binding domain of the Vibrio cholerae adhesin FrhA was solved by X‐ray crystallography, revealing how the inhibitory peptide AGYTD binds tightly at its Ca2+‐coordinated pocket. Structure‐guided design incorporating D‐amino acids enhanced binding affinity, providing a foundation for developing anti‐adhesion therapeutics ...
