Molecular insights into the VIRESCENS amino acid sequence and its implication in anthocyanin production in red- and yellow-fruited cultivars of date palm

open access: yesScientific Reports, 2023
This study examined the amino acid sequence of the VIRESCENS gene (VIR), which regulates the production of anthocyanin in 12 cultivars of the date palm (Phoenix dactylifera L.), grown in Al-Madinah Al-Munawarah of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia.

Length-Dependent Transition from Extended to Folded Shapes in Short Oligomers of an Azetidine-Based α-Amino Acid: The Critical Role of NH···N H-Bonds

open access: yesMolecules, 2023
Hydrogen bonds (H-bonds) are ubiquitous in peptides and proteins and are central to the stabilization of their structures. Inter-residue H-bonds between non-adjacent backbone amide NH and C=O motifs lead to the well-known secondary structures of helices,

Functionally different PIN proteins control auxin flux during bulbil development in Agave tequilana [PDF]

open access: yes, 2015
In Agave tequilana, reproductive failure or inadequate flower development stimulates the formation of vegetative bulbils at the bracteoles, ensuring survival in a hostile environment.

The planar cell polarity protein Vangl2 interacts with the PDZ‐domains of Scribble but not with a unique PDZ‐like domain in Inturned

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Structural and biochemical characterisations show that the planar cell polarity (PCP) protein Inturned harbours a unique PDZ‐like domain that does not bind canonical PDZ‐binding motifs (PBMs) like that of another PCP protein Vangl2. In contrast, the apical‐basal polarity protein Scribble contains four PDZ domains that bind Vangl2, but one PDZ domain ...

Tau acetylation at K331 has limited impact on tau pathology in vivo

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
We mapped tau post‐translational modifications in humanized MAPT knock‐in mice and in amyloid‐bearing double knock‐in mice. Acetylation within the repeat domain, particularly around K331, showed modest increases under amyloid pathology. To test functional relevance, we generated MAPTK331Q knock‐in mice.

Molecular evolution of HoxA13 and the multiple origins of limbless morphologies in amphibians and reptiles [PDF]

open access: yes, 2015
Developmental processes and their results, morphological characters, are inherited through transmission of genes regulating development. While there is ample evidence that cis-regulatory elements tend to be modular, with sequence segments dedicated to ...

Calpain small subunit homodimerization is robust and calcium‐independent

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Calpains dimerize via penta‐EF‐hand (PEF) domains. Using single‐molecule force spectroscopy, we measured the strength and kinetics of PEF–PEF homodimer binding. The interaction is robust, shows a transient conformational step before dissociation, and remains largely insensitive to Ca2+.

Asymmetric synthesis of β-amino acid derivatives by stereocontrolled C(sp3)-C(sp2) cross-electrophile coupling via radical 1,2-nitrogen migration

open access: yesNature Communications
Optically pure non-natural β-amino acids are noteworthy molecular motifs of numerous pharmaceutically important molecules. Skeletal editing of abundant α-amino acid scaffolds via tandem radical 1,2-N-shift/cross-coupling represents a powerful tool to ...

MDD-Palm: Identification of protein S-palmitoylation sites with substrate motifs based on maximal dependence decomposition.

open access: yesPLoS ONE, 2017
S-palmitoylation, the covalent attachment of 16-carbon palmitic acids to a cysteine residue via a thioester linkage, is an important reversible lipid modification that plays a regulatory role in a variety of physiological and biological processes. As the

Population level analysis of human immunodeficiency virus type 1 hypermutation and its relationship with APOBEC3G and vif genetic variation [PDF]

open access: yes, 2006
APOBEC3G and APOBEC3F restrict human immunodeficiency virus type 1 (HIV-1) replication in vitro through the induction of G!92A hypermutation; however, the relevance of this host antiviral strategy to clinical HIV-1 is currently not known.
