Prior transfection with antisense oligonucleotides to the H13 and 4F2 hc genes, singly or in combination, was found to inhibit phytohaemagglutinin-induced activation of cationic amino-acid transport system y+ in human peripheral blood mononuclear cells (mostly circulating lymphocytes).

The physical dimensions and shape of bacterial cells define the surface area available to acquire nutrients and the volume available for synthesizing proteins and DNA. Here, we use computational systems biology to decode the importance of cell geometry as a major determinant of prokaryotic phenotype, including growth rate and metabolic efficiency. This

We present robust protocols for the preparation of supported lipid bilayers (SLBs) incorporating either Salmonella smooth LPS or outer membrane vesicles (OMVs). We use a combination of quartz crystal microbalance with dissipation (QCM‐D) and fluorescence microscopy to both characterize the SLBs of various compositions and to probe their interactions ...

Structural insights and therapeutic targets in Acinetobacter baumannii capsule biosynthesis
Hypervirulent KL49 A. baumannii's capsular polysaccharide contains the nonulosonic acid 8‐epi‐Leg5,7Ac2, synthesized by epimerization via ElaA, ElaB, and ElaC. Crystal structures of ElaA, ElaB, and ElaC reveal their role in CMP‐Leg5,7Ac2 synthesis and regioselective C8 epimerization.

Amino acid transport systems required for diazotrophic growth in the cyanobacterium Anabaena sp. strain PCC 7120 [PDF]
Uptake of 16 amino acids by the filamentous, heterocyst-forming cyanobacterium Anabaena sp. strain PCC 7120 was characterized with regard to kinetic parameters of transport, intracellular accumulation of the transported amino acids, and sensitivity of ...

Inositol pyrophosphates are energy‐rich signaling molecules that perform critical functions in cells. Three different families of phosphatases hydrolyze the β phosphate of the inositol pyrophosphate molecules: two have narrow specificities and one is promiscuous.

Protein aggregates threaten proteostasis and cell health. In human cells, Hsp70–J‐domain protein‐based disaggregases remove aggregates, but how they assemble remains unclear. Our biochemical findings show that DNAJA2‐ and DNAJB1‐containing disaggregase scaffolds enhance luciferase aggregate targeting, and that Hsp70 recruitment by both J‐domain ...

Characterization of amino acid transport in human endothelial cells.
The transport of amino acids has been studied in human umbilical vein endothelial cells. Neutral amino acids enter human umbilical vein endothelial cells through three distinct agencies endowed with the characteristics of systems A, ASC, and L.
