GABA (γ-Aminobutyric Acid)

2016
Gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA) is a small (molecular weight: 103 g/mol) zwitterionic nonprotein amino acid (Roberts and Frankel 1950) that can be found in all prokaryotic and eukaryotic organisms including plants. It is the main inhibitory neurotransmitter in the mammalian brain but has many distinct roles within different tissues in an organism.

BRAIN 4‐AMINOBUTYRATE

Journal of Neurochemistry, 1968
Abstract—A systematic study was made of aminobutyrate transaminase (4‐aminobutyrate: 2‐oxoglutarate aminotransferase, I.U.B.2.6.1.19) in the developing rat brain. Assays of enzymic activity were made in whole brain of seven to twenty‐one animals at each day of age from birth to day 30. The numerous analyses allowed statistical treatment and recognition

4-Aminobutyric acid methyl ester hydrochloride, a precursor of 4-aminobutyric acid

Biochemical Pharmacology, 1983
4-Aminobutyric methyl ester hydrochloride (GME) is able to cross the blood-brain barrier after intracardiac administration to the rat. GME has an LD50 of 1300 mg/kg in mice and 950 mg/kg in rats, exhibits an antiaggressive effect and is able to decrease isoniazid-induced convulsions in the rat.
