The coupled nitrification-denitrification process plays a pivotal role in cycling and removal of nitrogen in aquatic ecosystems. In the present study, the communities of ammonia oxidizers and denitrifiers in the sediments of 2 basins (Guozhenghu Basin ...

Dung beetles suppressed cumulative methane flux from cattle dung by 85% and reduced total greenhouse gas emissions by 18%. Beetle activity accelerated initial CO2 release but did not alter total cumulative flux. N2O and NH3 fluxes were transient and not consistently driven by beetle presence.

Nitrogen removal and ammonia-oxidising bacteria in a vertical flow constructed wetland treating inorganic wastewater [PDF]
Nitrogen removal performance and the ammonia-oxidising bacterial (AOB) community were assessed in the batch loaded 1.3ha saturated surface vertical flow wetland at CSBP Ltd, a fertiliser and chemical manufacturer located in Kwinana, Western Australia ...

Occurrence of ammonia-oxidizing archaea in wastewater treatment plant bioreactors
We report molecular evidence that ammonia-oxidizing archaea (AOA) occur in activated sludge bioreactors used to remove ammonia from wastewater. Using PCR primers targeting archaeal ammonia monooxygenase subunit A (amoA) genes, we retrieved and compared ...

Ammonia-oxidizing archaea in engineered biofiltration systems [PDF]
Ammonia is a nitrogenous metabolic waste product that is produced by all animal life. High concentrations of ammonia are toxic to animals and may result in algal blooms and eutrophication in aquatic environments. To prevent negative impacts on animal and

Meta-analysis reveals ammonia-oxidizing bacteria respond more strongly to nitrogen addition than ammonia-oxidizing archaea [PDF]
Shifts in microbial communities driven by anthropogenic nitrogen (N) addition have broad-scale ecological consequences. However, responses of microbial groups to exogenous N supply vary considerably across studies, hindering efforts to predict community ...

Effect of Nicotine on Soil Microbiota and Nitrification in a Microcosm Experiment
Tobacco cultivation leads to nicotine accumulation in soil, but how nicotine affects soil nitrification and ammonia-oxidizing microorganisms remains poorly understood.

Nitrifier Gene Abundance and Diversity in Sediments Impacted by Acid Mine Drainage
Extremely acidic and metal-rich acid mine drainage (AMD) waters can have severe toxicological effects on aquatic ecosystems. AMD has been shown to completely halt nitrification, which plays an important role in transferring nitrogen to higher organisms ...
