Polysaccharide Hydrogels with Waste Wool Fibre as Matrix for Potential Use as CRF Fertiliser

open access: yesMolecules
At a time of climate change, farmers face difficulties in providing food for a growing population. This results in the overuse of water and fertilisers.

A semi-quantitative scattering theory of amorphous materials

open access: yes, 2008
It is argued that topological disorder in amorphous solids can be described by local strains related to local reference crystals and local rotations. An intuitive localization criterion is formulated from this point of view.

Composition‐Tuned Enhancement of the Anomalous Nernst Effect in FeCo–Pt Thin Films on Rigid and Flexible Substrates

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, EarlyView.
Disordered (Fe50Co50)1−xPtx thin films exhibit a pronounced anomalous Nernst effect (ANE) with a strong composition dependence on both rigid and flexible substrates. The transverse thermoelectric response peaks near 22.5 at.% Pt, accompanied by enhanced αxy/σxy scaling, thermal transport, and ANE sensitivity.

Simple Thermal Treatment of Waste Oyster (Crassostrea belcheri) Shells for the Production of Calcium Minerals in Biomaterials Application

open access: yesNano Biomedicine and Engineering
The effect of the thermal treatment of waste oyster (Crassostrea belcheri) shells on different properties was explored. In this preliminary work, the waste oyster shells were collected from Muar River, Malaysia.

Improved process for making thin-film sodium niobate capacitors [PDF]

open access: yes, 1968
Sodium niobate, formed by high vacuum, flash, and reactive evaporations, has a high dielectric constant and is used as a thin film dielectric in microelectronic capacitors. High purity films are formed from relatively inexpensive, pure starting materials.

Effect of Laser Deoxidation on Adhesive‐Bonded Aluminum in an Oxygen‐Free Atmosphere

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, EarlyView.
This study investigates laser ablation of aluminum under oxygen‐free conditions. The goal is to produce oxide‐free substrates that enable improved adhesive bonding with epoxy. Optimized laser parameters (90% overlap, 300 µJ) combined with oxide‐free substrates result in the highest tensile strength of the adhesive bond.

Intermediate Phase in Calcium–Silicate–Hydrates: Mechanical, Structural, Rigidity, and Stress Signatures

open access: yesFrontiers in Materials, 2019
Topological constraint theory (TCT) classifies disordered networks as flexible, stressed-rigid, or isostatic based on the balance between the number of topological constraints and degrees of freedom.

Nanomechanical morphology of amorphous, transition, and crystalline domains in phase change memory thin films

open access: yes, 2014
In the search for phase change materials (PCM) that may rival traditional random access memory, a complete understanding of the amorphous to crystalline phase transition is required.

Investigation of Thermo‐Chemical Processes in Commercial MgO‐C Refractory Bricks With and Without MgO‐C Recyclate at Elevated Temperatures

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, EarlyView.
This study investigates thermo‐chemical processes during high‐temperature testing of two commercial MgO‐C brick grades, one containing 47.5 wt.% MgO‐C recyclate. Using ETV, DTA/TG‐MS, XRD, and SEM/EDS/EBSD, mechanisms such as carbothermal reduction of magnesia, impurity incorporation into the secondary MgO surface layer, and calcium‐rich phase ...
