STARK, NECESSARY AND NOT PERMANENT: HUTS IN THE WORK OF PAUL CELAN AND J. H. PRYNNE

open access: yesGerman Life and Letters, Volume 69, Issue 3, Page 350-364, July 2016., 2016
ABSTRACT This article examines the motif of the hut in the work of Paul Celan and J. H. Prynne as a metaphor for poetry which also mediates the relationship between poetry, language and place. Both Prynne's and Celan's use of the hut motif intersects with the role played by huts in work by Martin Heidegger, but this article demonstrates, through close ...

A non‐ionic green surfactant extracted from the Anabasis setifera plant for improving bulk properties of CO2‐foam in the process of enhanced oil recovery from carbonate reservoirs

open access: yesThe Canadian Journal of Chemical Engineering, Volume 103, Issue 2, Page 590-605, February 2025.
Foam injection process including assembling a foam production system connected to a CO2 capsule, cutting plugs and creating a fracture pattern, assembling the fractured plug into the core holder, and injecting foam using a coreflooding device. Abstract Foam, as a gas‐in‐liquid colloid, has a higher appearance viscosity than the one of both gas and ...

Seed Dispersal and Germination Traits of 70 Plant Species Inhabiting the Gurbantunggut Desert in Northwest China

open access: yesThe Scientific World Journal, Volume 2014, Issue 1, 2014., 2014
Seed dispersal and germination were examined for 70 species from the cold Gurbantunggut Desert in northwest China. Mean and range (3 orders of magnitude) of seed mass were smaller and narrower than those in other floras (5–8 orders of magnitude), which implies that selection favors relatively smaller seeds in this desert.

Intensive grazing confounds the patterns of plant compositional change along a soil pH gradient, not an aridity gradient, in the Mongolian steppe

open access: yesGrassland Science, Volume 71, Issue 1, Page 42-50, January 2025.
Abstract Aridity, edaphic variables and livestock grazing are major drivers of plant community composition across arid rangelands. Accumulated knowledge exists on the impact of each driver on community composition. Although previous studies have demonstrated changes in direct grazing impacts on ecosystem functions and community composition at different

The Relationship between Diaspore Characteristics with Phylogeny, Life History Traits, and Their Ecological Adaptation of 150 Species from the Cold Desert of Northwest China

open access: yesThe Scientific World Journal, Volume 2014, Issue 1, 2014., 2014
Diaspore characteristics of 22 families, including 102 genera and 150 species (55 represented by seeds and 95 by fruits) from the Gurbantunggut Desert were analyzed for diaspore biological characteristics (mass, shape, color, and appendage type). The diaspore mass and shape were significantly different in phylogeny group (APG) and dispersal syndromes ...

Qaryat al‐Fāw/Qaryatum dhāt Kāhilim: On the identity of the god Kahl

open access: yesArabian Archaeology and Epigraphy, Volume 35, Issue 1, Page 136-154, November 2024.
Abstract Qaryatum dhāt Kāhilim (‘the City of [the god] Kahl’) is the Ancient South Arabian name of the modern site of Qaryat al‐Fāw. This compound refers to the tutelary deity of the city, in this case, a god called Kahl. However, the identity of this Kahl is obscure.

Foraging patterns of habitat use reveal landscape of fear of Nubian ibex Capra nubiana

open access: yesWildlife Biology, Volume 18, Issue 2, Page 194-201, June 2012., 2012
Different environmental features may serve as cues of the risk of predation. Therefore, when foraging in heterogeneous landscapes, the costs of predation for optimal foragers should vary along with the environmental features. In our study, we describe how foraging costs of predation vary spatially for Nubian ibex Capra nubiana with respect to ...

THE TWILIGHT OF THE GODS? GENOMIC HISTORY AND THE RETURN OF RACE IN THE STUDY OF THE ANCIENT MEDITERRANEAN

open access: yesHistory and Theory, Volume 63, Issue 1, Page 45-70, March 2024.
ABSTRACT This article discusses the impact of genomic history, a subdiscipline that emerged in the study of the ancient Mediterranean in the 2010s. In 2014, scientists first published a method for extracting genetic material, which they christened aDNA (ancient DNA), from ancient human remains in hot climates.
