Oral Health, Periodontitis, and Respiratory Diseases: Biological Pathways

open access: yesJournal of Periodontal Research, EarlyView.
This narrative review aims to provide a comprehensive update on the potential mechanisms by which poor oral health and periodontitis impact lung health, focusing on pneumonia, COPD, and asthma. ABSTRACT Poor oral hygiene and periodontitis influence lung diseases such as pneumonia, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), COVID‐19, and asthma.

Periodontitis and Rheumatoid Arthritis—Mechanistic Evidence

open access: yesJournal of Periodontal Research, EarlyView.
Periodontitis and rheumatoid arthritis are linked via the two‐hit model whereby early periodontal inflammation can lead to autoantibody production capable of interacting with inflamed synovial tissues. Subsequent systemic inflammation can exacerbate the periodontal inflammatory response and bacterial dysbiosis leading to further autoantibody production

The Dual Face of Fusobacterium nucleatum in Cancer: Foe, Friend or Both?

open access: yesJournal of Periodontal Research, EarlyView.
Fusobacterium nucleatum has established interactions with cancers in humans. However, contrary to a traditional view that these interactions are uniformly pro‐tumoural, recent evidence suggests a more nuanced role, where contact‐dependent and contact‐independent mechanisms may support either tumour progression or restriction depending on tumour site ...

Occurrence of infections in dogs receiving ciclosporin in a single‐centre UK referral population

open access: yesJournal of Small Animal Practice, EarlyView.
Objectives The study aimed (a) to describe the occurrence and nature of new infections in dogs receiving oral ciclosporin and (b) to identify any risk factors associated with the development of a new infection whilst receiving ciclosporin. Materials and Methods In this retrospective cohort study, medical records of dogs presented to a private UK ...

In vitro activity against aerobes and anaerobes of Trospectomycin versus Spectinomycin

open access: yes, 1991
The general antibacterial properties of trospectomycin (TRO) were compared with those of spectinomycin (SPEC) in an in vitro study using a collection of recent clinical isolates: 50 Gram-positive and 25 Gram-negative aerobes and 30 Gram-positive and 15 ...

A Visual Analogue Scale Exercise for Teaching Antimicrobial Selection in Veterinary Pharmacology: Tool Development and Initial Implementation

open access: yesJournal of Veterinary Pharmacology and Therapeutics, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT Veterinary students often find it difficult to select antimicrobial drugs for patients, likely because it requires them to consider multiple factors and there are frequently several possible options with a lack of a defined “correct or incorrect” choice. Our goal was to develop a teaching tool to engage the students through the decision‐making

Architecture and Evolution of Prokaryotic Multicellularity: Common Patterns and Diversity

open access: yesMolecular Microbiology, EarlyView.
Prokaryotes form diverse multicellular structures, like biofilms, filaments, and aggregates, comprising hallmark traits such as adhesion, communication, differentiation, and programmed cell death. This review explores how these forms develop, function, and evolve in response to environmental cues.

Microbiome‐Dependent Modulation of Trichomonas vaginalis Cytotoxicity and Remodeling of the Parasite Secretome

open access: yesMolecular Microbiology, EarlyView.
Our study shows that vaginal bacteria can either suppress or amplify the pathogenic behavior of the protozoan parasite Trichomonas vaginalis. A protective Lactobacillus‐dominated microbiome in eubiosis reduces parasite‐induced damage, whereas dysbiotic bacteria enhance cytotoxicity, followed by changes in the profile of the parasite's secreted proteins.
