Control strategy for maximum anaerobic co-digestion performance

Water Research, 2015
A control strategy for optimising the performance of anaerobic co-digestion in terms of methane productivity, digestate quality and process stability is presented. A linear programming approach is adopted to calculate the feeding of multiple substrates for maximum methane productivity, subjected to restrictions based on experimental and heuristic ...

Evaluation of parameters for monitoring an anaerobic co-digestion process

Applied Microbiology and Biotechnology, 2000
The system investigated in this study is an anaerobic digester at a municipal wastewater treatment plant operating on sludge from the wastewater treatment, co-digested with carbohydrate-rich food-processing waste. The digester is run below maximum capacity to prevent overload.

Anaerobic Co-Digestion of Dairy Manure and Glycerin

2008 Providence, Rhode Island, June 29 - July 2, 2008, 2008
Co-digestion of dairy manure and glycerin was investigated as a strategy for improving the performance and economics of a dairy manure digester and also producing energy from glycerin, a byproduct of biodiesel production. The digestibility of dairy manure, glycerin and their mixtures were studied using batch anaerobic digestion experiments.

Achievements and perspectives of anaerobic co-digestion: A review

Journal of Cleaner Production, 2018
Abstract The world is now seeking sources of renewable energy that are both economical and environmentally friendly. Purified biogas is one essential source of renewable energy that can act as a substitute for fossil fuels. Anaerobic digestion has been recognised as a biochemical method of biogas generation that can convert organic compounds into a ...

Anaerobic co-digestion of sewage sludge with OFMSW

Gjornâl Furlan des Siencis, 2011
Anaerobic co-digestion of sewage sludge with Organic Fraction of Municipal Solid Waste (OFMSW) appears to be an interesting solution to increase the biogas production of WWTP (WasteWater Treatment Plant) under-loaded digesters. In this study developed by the Department of Chemistry, Physics and Environment of Udine University, the co-digestion process ...

Anaerobic co-digestion of urban and rural wastes

Renewable Energy, 1999
Abstract So far the technology of anaerobic digestion has not been able to meet the predicted expectation to its potential. Many factors have been influencing this but a generally trend has been that the biogas plants constructed have had problems of both technical and financial art even they as a rule have been subsidised with close to 50 ...

Mixture optimization of anaerobic co-digestion of tomato and cucumber waste

Environmental Technology, 2015
Greenhouse cultivation has significantly increased the production of vegetables and reduced dependence on environmental conditions. In Mediterranean areas, vegetable crops are nowadays one of the most important sources of organic waste generation. Anaerobic digestion is among the methods used to treat this type of biodegradable waste.

Anaerobic batch co-digestion of sisal pulp and fish wastes

Bioresource Technology, 2004
Co-digestion of various wastes has been shown to improve the digestibility of the materials and biogas yield. Batchwise digestion of sisal pulp and fish waste was studied both with the wastes separately and with mixtures in various proportions. While the highest methane yields from sisal pulp and fish waste alone were 0.32 and 0.39 m3 CH4/kg volatile ...

Anaerobic digestion of glycerol and co-digestion of glycerol and pig manure

Journal of Environmental Management, 2012
The potential of glycerol obtained from transesterification of waste cooking oil as a main carbon source for biogas production was investigated. The glycerol was highly contaminated with oils and fats and was pretreated with sulfuric acid. Using a carbon source of glucose as a control, we compared biogas production from the acid-treated glycerol in a ...

Generalised modelling approach for anaerobic co-digestion of fermentable substrates

Bioresource Technology, 2013
A general methodology to implement fermentable soluble substrates in the IWA Anaerobic Digestion Model No. 1 (ADM1) that extends its application to anaerobic co-digestion of multiple substrates is presented. The approach considers the fermentation of new soluble substrates, not originally described in ADM1, as channelled through mass- and electron ...
