Analog Radio over Fiber Links for Future 5G Radio Access Networks

2019 21st International Conference on Transparent Optical Networks (ICTON), 2019
Bandwidth constraint in the radio access networks is, nowadays, a mayor problem in the implementation of next generation 5G mobile communications. In order to cope with increasing bandwidth demands, the use of the millimeter-wave (mmWave) spectrum, together with Radio over Fiber (RoF) technology has been proposed.

Analog and Digitized Radio-over-Fiber

2017
Radio-over-Fiber (RoF) techniques aim to simplify as much as possible the configuration and the cost of the radio terminations of wireless networks. Both wireless LANs (WLAN) and cellular networks can potentially benefit from RoF. In wireless systems, the most costly equipment is the radio oscillators today necessary at each antenna site (called remote

Radio over Fiber : DWDM Analog/digital Access Network and its Enabling Technologies

LEOS 2007 - IEEE Lasers and Electro-Optics Society Annual Meeting Conference Proceedings, 2007
Dense WDM access network which allows to co-exists analog radio over fiber and digital FTTH systems is investigated. Focuses are on the enabling techniques such as optical frequency interleaved DWDM grid assignment, supercontinuum light source, multi-band RoF and digital signals transmission, and optical path routing for dynamic channel allocation for ...

Low-cost embedded OTDR monitoring for direct modulation analog radio over fiber

2017 SBMO/IEEE MTT-S International Microwave and Optoelectronics Conference (IMOC), 2017
We present a low-cost embedded Optical Time Domain Reflectometer (OTDR) solution for link monitoring of direct modulation analog Radio over Fiber (a-RoF) systems transporting Long Term Evolution Advance (LTE-A) signals. Experimental results show that monitoring can be performed in-service and offline in order to detect fiber faults and quantify losses.

A 5GHz Analog Laser Diode Driver for Radio-over-Fiber Transmission Applications

Applied Mechanics and Materials, 2014
The design of an analog laser diode (LD) driver for 5GHz radio-over-fiber (ROF) transmission systems is presented in this paper. The proposed linear LD driver adopted a single-ended two-stage amplifier structure with the operating voltages of 1.8V and 3.3V respectively. The technique of self-biased cascade amplifier is employed to increase the gain and

Subcarrier Multiplexing RF Plans for Analog Radio Over Fiber in Heterogeneous Networks

Journal of Lightwave Technology, 2016
Analogue Radio over Fibre together with subcarrier multiplexing and wavelength division multiplexing is proven to be more cost-efficient when compared to CPRI fronthaul solutions. Furthermore, the results of the allocation of RF channels to better exploit the available modulation bandwidth of commercial transceivers show that the uniformly spaced ...

High-performance analog photo receiver for millimeter-wave radio-over-fiber applications

Microwave Photonics (MWP) and the 2014 9th Asia-Pacific Microwave Photonics Conference (APMP) 2014 International Topical Meeting on, 2014
We have developed a high-conversion-gain analog photoreceiver for millimeter-wave radio-over-fiber applications. The performance was tested with an optical back-to-back configuration at a symbol rate of 1.76-2.2 Gbaud in π/2-shift BPSK and 16-QAM at a single carrier frequency of 32 GHz.

Complexity-reduced analog predistortion using schottky diode for radio-over-fiber systems

2014 12th International Conference on Optical Internet 2014 (COIN), 2014
In this paper, we propose a novel and simple predistortion method using schottky diode to compensate the nonlinear characteristics of the DFB-LD for RoF systems. The experimental results show that the enhancement of about 30 dB in the third-order intermodulation distortion (IMD3) and about 10 dB in the spurious-free dynamic range (SFDR) are achieved at

Analog Radio-over-fiber WDM-PON Architecture for 5G Millimeter-wave Interface

2019 PhotonIcs & Electromagnetics Research Symposium - Spring (PIERS-Spring), 2019
Migration paths towards 5G require to increase network capacity and raise typical end-user data rates from 10 to 100 times. Wavelength division multiplexed passive optical network (WDM-PON) based third-generation fiber-to-the-x (FTTx) system architectures will be capable to provide solutions related to nowadays network problems with transmission ...

Heterogeneous III-V/silicon laser characterization for analog radio over fiber application

Semiconductor Lasers and Laser Dynamics XI
Heterogeneous integration of III-V semiconductor material on a Silicon substrate presented a promising solution to the challenge of laser integration in Silicon photonics. This will greatly benefit sensitive applications such as Analog Radio over Fiber (ARoF) in achieving a low-cost, highly integrated, and limited noise architecture. Meanwhile, careful
