Microcystins and anatoxin-a in Arctic biocrust cyanobacterial communities

open access: yesToxicon, 2015
In the polar regions cyanobacteria are an important element of plant communities and represent the dominant group of primary producers. They commonly form thick highly diverse biological soil crusts that provide microhabitats for other organisms. Cyanobacteria are also producers of toxic secondary metabolites.

Neurotoxic Anatoxin-a Can Also Exert Immunotoxicity by the Induction of Apoptosis on Carassius auratus Lymphocytes in vitro When Exposed to Environmentally Relevant Concentrations

open access: yesFrontiers in Physiology, 2020
Hazardous anatoxin-a (ANTX-a) is produced by freshwater algal blooms worldwide, which greatly increases the risk of consumer exposure. Although ANTX-a shows widespread neurotoxicity in aquatic animals, little is known about its mechanism of action and ...

Vaccine Candidates Designed to Prevent Enterotoxigenic Escherichia coli Diarrhoea: A Scoping Review of Clinical Trials Evaluating Vaccine Candidates in Development

open access: yesTropical Medicine &International Health, Volume 31, Issue 3, Page 295-306, March 2026.
ABSTRACT Objectives The primary objectives of this study are to (1) summarise the current landscape of ETEC vaccine development by describing, characterising and comparing ETEC vaccine candidates in clinical development, (2) assess key characteristics of the phases 1, 2 and 3 clinical trials that have been designed to evaluate ETEC vaccines in ...

A humanized NOG‐EXL mouse model for producing severe fever with thrombocytopenia syndrome virus–reactive human antibodies

open access: yesAnimal Models and Experimental Medicine, Volume 9, Issue 2, Page 378-388, February 2026.
Humanized mouse models are essential for studying human immune response and antibody development. However, conventional models exhibit limited B cell maturation and antigen‐specific humoral responses. To overcome these limitations, we used the NOG‐EXL mice expressing human interleukin 3 (IL‐3) and granulocyte‐macrophage colony‐stimulating factor (GM ...

Degradation of widespread cyanotoxins with high impact in drinking water (microcystins, cylindrospermopsin, anatoxin-a and saxitoxin) by CWPO.

open access: yesWater Research, 2019
The occurrence of harmful cyanobacterial blooms has unabated increased over the last few decades, posing a significant risk for public health. In this work, we investigate the feasibility of catalytic wet peroxide oxidation (CWPO) promoted by modified ...

Aptamer Engineering: Strategies for Discovering Functional Nucleic Acids for Next‐Generation Diagnostics and Biosensing

open access: yesAdvanced Science, Volume 13, Issue 2, 9 January 2026.
The advent of aptamers has highlighted their potential as alternatives to antibodies, overcoming limitations of structural instability and production cost. However, conventional approaches such as SELEX remain slow and labor‐intensive. This review examines recent advances in aptamer engineering, emphasizing in vitro and AI‐driven in silico strategies ...

Benthic Archives Reveal Recurrence and Dominance of Toxigenic Cyanobacteria in a Eutrophic Lake over the Last 220 Years

open access: yesToxins, 2017
Akinetes are resistant cells which have the ability to persist in sediment for several decades. We have investigated the temporal distribution of akinetes of two species, Dolichospermum macrosporum and Dolichospermum flos-aquae, in a sediment core ...

Diagnosis of Anatoxin-a Poisoning in Dogs from North America [PDF]

open access: yesJournal of Veterinary Diagnostic Investigation, 2008
Anatoxin-a, a toxin produced by several genera of blue-green algae, is considered a potent neurotoxin. Ingestion of water contaminated with the toxin results in acute neurological signs and often death. This report describes fatal cases of anatoxin-a ingestion in 6 dogs, with confirmation of anatoxin-a exposure by liquid chromatography/tandem mass ...
