Iodine and nutrient speciation in anchialine cave waters (Bjejajka Cave, East Adriatic Coast)

open access: yesEstuarine, Coastal and Shelf Science, 2009
In oxic seawater dissolved iodine is principally consisted of iodate and iodide, at a total concentration of ~450 nM. Although iodate is thermodynamically favoured form of inorganic iodine, iodide concentrations may be high, as is the case in surface waters of temperate shelf seas.

The trophic role of cave shrimps of the genus Typhlatya seen through stable isotope eyes [PDF]

open access: yesSubterranean Biology
With the aim of describing the isotopic niche of the anchialine shrimps of the genus Typhlatya from the Yucatan Peninsula (YP) we analyze a dataset that includes three of the four species present in the region using published and new δ13C and δ15N values.

Screening of NaCl salinity sensitivity across eight species of subterranean amphipod genus Niphargus

open access: yesEcotoxicology and Environmental Safety, 2022
Secondary salinization of freshwater is becoming a growing environmental problem. Currently, there is few data available on the effects of salinisation on subterranean crustaceans that are vital for the maintenance of groundwater ecosystem functioning ...

New records of anchialine fauna from the Yucatan Peninsula, Mexico [PDF]

open access: yesCheck List, 2015
New records for 17 species of crustaceans from anchialine systems in the Yucatan Peninsula, Mexico, are presented. The records come from explorations in Dzilam de Bravo, Yucatan, and from Puerto Aventuras and the Nohoch Nah Chich and Ox Bel Ha cave ...

Preventing Invasive Non‐Native Species: A Horizon Scanning for the Canary Islands

open access: yesDiversity and Distributions, Volume 32, Issue 10, October 2026.
ABSTRACT Aim Oceanic islands host exceptional biodiversity and endemism but are highly vulnerable to biological invasions. We aimed to identify non‐native species with high potential to invade the Canary Islands within the next decade and to prioritise them based on their environmental and socioeconomic risks.

The rhythm of the night: Assessing temporal variation of activity patterns in arhythmic environments from field data

open access: yesEcosphere, Volume 17, Issue 8, August 2026.
Abstract Ecologists and zoologists have worked for centuries to understand the spreading, extent, and regulation of biological rhythms among eukaryotes living in arhythmic ecosystems. Investigating whether the long‐standing hypothesis that biological clocks went lost in species inhabiting arhythmic environments can thus have broad implications in ...

The Aerolito de Paraiso – anchialine system: paradise for echinoderms [PDF]

open access: yes, 2012
The anchialine cave Aerolito de Paraiso is located in Cozumel Island, Mexico. It is unique because it is mainly inhabited by four classes of echinoderms.

Physiological characterization of Typhlatya cave shrimps: linking habitat with aerobic metabolism

open access: yesFrontiers in Marine Science, 2022
The anchialine environment is characterized by a vertical stratification of water masses with different salinities. Cave shrimps of the genus Typhlatya are widespread inhabitants of the aquifer in fresh, brackish, and marine groundwater. Here we describe

A new species of the cave-fish genus Lucifuga (Ophidiiformes, Bythitidae), from eastern Cuba [PDF]

open access: yesZooKeys, 2020
Recently, a barcoding study and a molecular phylogenetic analysis of the Cuban species of the cave-fish genus Lucifuga Poey, 1858 revealed the existence of different evolutionary lineages that were previously unknown or passed unnoticed by morphological ...
