Hypervelocity stars from the Andromeda galaxy [PDF]

open access: yesMonthly Notices of the Royal Astronomical Society, 2008
Hypervelocity stars (HVSs) discovered in the Milky Way (MW) halo are thought to be ejected from near the massive black hole (MBH) at the galactic centre. In this paper we investigate the spatial and velocity distributions of the HVSs which are expected to be similarly produced in the Andromeda galaxy (M31).

The Andromeda Galaxy and Its Star Formation History

open access: yesUniverse, 2023
The state of knowledge of the properties of the Andromeda Galaxy (also known as M31) is reviewed. The spatial structure of the Andromeda Galaxy, its main source populations, and the properties of its gas and dust are discussed.

Andromeda XXXV: The Faintest Dwarf Satellite of the Andromeda Galaxy

open access: yesThe Astrophysical Journal Letters
We present the discovery of Andromeda XXXV, the faintest Andromeda satellite galaxy discovered to date, identified as an overdensity of stars in the Pan-Andromeda Archaeological Survey and confirmed via Hubble Space Telescope imaging.

Rotational Curves of the Milky Way Galaxy and Andromeda Galaxy in Light of Vacuum Polarization around Eicheon

open access: yesUniverse, 2023
Eicheon properties are discussed. It is shown that the eicheon surface allows setting a boundary condition for the vacuum polarization and obtaining a solution describing the dark matter tail in the Milky Way Galaxy. That is, the dark matter in the Milky

Evidence for a Massive Andromeda Galaxy Using Satellite Galaxy Proper Motions

open access: yesThe Astrophysical Journal, 2023
We present new mass estimates for Andromeda (M31) using the orbital angular momenta of four satellite galaxies (M33, NGC 185, NGC 147, and IC 10) derived from existing proper motions, distances, and line-of-sight velocities. We infer two masses for M31: $

The PAndAS View of the Andromeda Satellite System. IV. Global Properties

open access: yesThe Astrophysical Journal, 2023
We build a statistical framework to infer the global properties of the satellite system of the Andromeda galaxy (M31) from the properties of individual dwarf galaxies located in the Pan-Andromeda Archaelogical Survey (PAndAS) and the previously ...

The Complex Structure of the Bulge of M31

open access: yesThe Astrophysical Journal Supplement Series, 2023
The bulge of M31 is of interest regarding the nature of galactic bulges and how their structure relates to bulge formation mechanisms and their subsequent evolution.

Are Disks of Satellites Comprised of Tidal Dwarf Galaxies?

open access: yesGalaxies, 2021
It was found that satellites of nearby galaxies can form flattened co-rotating structures called disks of satellites or planes of satellites. Their existence is not expected by the current galaxy formation simulations in the standard dark matter-based ...

The Chemodynamics of the Stellar Populations in M31 from APOGEE Integrated-light Spectroscopy

open access: yesThe Astrophysical Journal, 2023
We present an analysis of nearly 1000 near-infrared, integrated-light spectra from APOGEE in the inner ∼7 kpc of M31. We utilize full-spectrum fitting with A-LIST simple stellar population spectral templates that represent a population of stars with the ...

The mass of the Andromeda galaxy [PDF]

open access: yesMonthly Notices of the Royal Astronomical Society, 2000
This paper argues that the Milky Way galaxy is probably the largest member of the Local Group. The evidence comes from estimates of the total mass of the Andromeda galaxy (M31) derived from the three dimensional positions and radial velocities of its satellite galaxies, as well as the projected positions and radial velocities of its distant globular ...
