Exposure to Androstenes Influences Processing of Emotional Words [PDF]

open access: yesFrontiers in Ecology and Evolution, 2018
There is evidence that human-produced androstenes affect attitudinal, emotional, and physiological states in a context-dependent manner, suggesting that they could be involved in modulating social interactions.

Dehydroepiandrosterone and Its Metabolite 5-Androstenediol: New Therapeutic Targets and Possibilities for Clinical Application [PDF]

open access: yesPharmaceuticals
Dehydroepiandrosterone and its sulfate are the most abundant steroids in humans. The metabolism of dehydroepiandrosterone can differ significantly depending on the organ or tissue and the subtype of steroid receptors expressed in it.

Current Issues in the Study of Androstenes in Human Chemosignaling

open access: yesVitamins and Hormones, 2010
We review research on the 16-androstenes and their special claim, born originally of the finding that androstenes function as boar pheromones, to be human chemosignals. Microbial fauna in human axillae act upon the 16-androstenes to produce odorous volatiles.

Discovery of 16-Androstenes (Androstenone and Androstenol), Their Synthesis Pathway, and Possible Role in Reproduction of Mouse Deer (Moschiola indica)

open access: yesCells, 2022
We discovered odorous 16-androstenes (Androstenone and Androstenol) in endangered mouse deer during a captive breeding program. This study examined the molecular characteristics, their synthesis pathway, and the possible functional role of these ...

Neurosteroids as Selective Inhibitors of Glycine Receptor Activity: Structure-Activity Relationship Study on Endogenous Androstanes and Androstenes

open access: yesFrontiers in Molecular Neuroscience, 2020
The ability of androstane and androstene neurosteroids with modifications at C-17, C-5, and C-3 (compounds 1-9) to influence the functional activity of inhibitory glycine and γ-aminobutyric acid (GABA) receptors was estimated.

Over-the-Counter Anabolic Steroids 4-Androsten-3,17-dione; 4-Androsten-3 ,17 -diol; and 19-nor-4-Androsten-3,17-dione: Excretion Studies in Men [PDF]

open access: yesJournal of Analytical Toxicology, 1999
Since the appearance of 4-androsten-3,17-dione (I) as a nutritional supplement in early 1997, we have frequently observed a characteristic deterioration of endogenous steroid profiles in athletes' urine in routine anabolic steroid testing in which concentrations of major endogenous urinary steroids and testosterone exceed normal.

Intermediates in 16‐androstene biosynthesis in neonatal porcine testis [PDF]

open access: yesFEBS Letters, 1984
The metabolism of pregnenolone has been studied in microsomal preparations of testes from 3‐week old piglets. Metabolites identified after derivatization by capillary gas‐chromatography and further by combined gas chromatography‐mass spectrometry were: 17‐hydroxy‐ and 16α‐hydroxypregnenolone, dehydroepiandrosterone, 5‐androstenediols, 5‐pregnenediol ...

Effect of Androstene Derivatives on Metacorticoid Hypertension

open access: yesExperimental Biology and Medicine, 1953
SummarySix derivatives of 4-androsten-3-one were tested for depressor activity in metacorticoid hypertensive rats. Replacement of the 11-hydroxyl by hydrogen or a keto group appeared to decrease the activity of the 17-ketosteroids and increase the activity of the 17-hydroxysteroids.
