Stimulation of Human Hematopoiesis: The Androstene Link.

Abstract 5-Androstene-3β, 17β-diol (AED) is a naturally occurring member of the androstene series of steroids. In models of chemotherapy and radiation-induced mylosuppression, AED expanded hematopoietic stem and progenitor cells (HSPC), decreased need for clinical support and increased survival.

Abstract The metabolism of 5α-[5α- 3 H]androst-16-en-3-one and [7α- 3 H]androsta-4, 16-dien-3-one by minces of boar submaxillary and parotid glands has been studied. Both ketones were reduced to mixtures of 5α-androst-16-en-3α- and -3β-ols by submaxillary gland tissue and to the 3α-alcohol by parotid gland tissue.

AbstractAndrostene and pregnene derivatives were functionalized by amides with rhodium or binary rhodium–cobalt catalysts. Whereas the Rh–PPh3 catalyzed reaction results in the unsaturated amido‐methylidene derivatives, the rapid hydrogenation of these compounds takes place in the presence of a basic PR3 ligand.

The in vitro metabolism in man of two 16-androstene steroids, 5alpha-16-androsten-3-one and 5alpha-16-androsten-3alpha-ol, has been studied using 3H-labelled tracers. 4 healthy subjects (2 of each sex) were chosen, and each labelled steroid was administered, by a single injection, to 1 man and 1 woman.
