Transmembrane electrophoresis of 8-anilino-1-naphthalenesulfonate through egg lecithin liposome membranes

Valinomycin has been shown to increase the amount of 8-anilino-1-naphthalenesulfonate (ANS) bound to egg lecithin liposomes and also to increase the maximum fluorescence value, as derived from double reciprocal plots. The assay conditions were such that addition of valinomycin would not produce a transmembrane potential.

[Fluorescence dynamics of anilino naphthalenesulfonate in mitochondria exposed to corticosteroids].

Anilino naphthalenesulfonate fluorescence dynamics in the rat liver mitochondria during the first six minutes after corticosteroid (corticosterone, cortisone, hydrocortisone, dexamethasone) and cholesterol treatment in vitro was studied. The biphasic character of the process was observed depending on the hydrophobicity and concentration of the steroids.

Uptake of the fluorescent probe, 1-anilino-8-naphthalene-sulfonate (I) into isolated rat liver cells was studied using both fluorescence and filtration methods. The time course of the fluorescence enhancement of I after addition to the isolated liver cells was analyzed in terms of rapid, medium, and slow phases.

Abstract The crystal and molecular structure of the fluorescent probe 8-anilino-1-naphthalenesulfonic acid (ANS) has been determined as the ammonium monohydrate with two conformationally distinct molecules in the triclinic P 1 ¯ lattice. The angles between the aromatic rings and the C N C plane are −9/22° and 112/22° respectively.
