Biphotonic ionization of 8-anilino-1-naphthalenesulfonate in polar solvents
Chemical Physics Letters, 1981Abstract The photoionization of 8-anilino-1-naphthalenesulfonate in polar solvents occurs through a biphotonic process, as proved by nanosecond flash photolysis. A transient absorption of a charge transfer to solvent (CTTS) state is found with ≈10 ns life-time. The state is shown to be an intermediate of the photoionization process.

The solvatochromic fluorescent probe 8-anilino-1-naphthalenesulfonate (ANS) has been used to study the hydrophobicity and conformational dynamics of lecithin:cholesterol acyltransferase (LCAT). The ANS to LCAT binding constant was estimated from titrations with ANS, keeping a constant concentration of LCAT (2 microM).

The interaction of 1-anilino-8-naphthalenesulfonate with lipids: A nuclear magnetic resonance study
Chemistry and Physics of Lipids, 1977The proton magnetic resonance (PMR) and phosphorus magnetic resonance (PhMR) spectra of egg phosphatidylcholine in the presence of 1-anilino-8-nahthalenesulfonate (ANS) have been studied. At low ratios of ANS to phospholipid, the spectra indicate that ANS molecules are in the lipid interface region where they interact with the head-group protons.

The acid exhibited an increase in fluorescence intensity accompanied by a hypsochromic shift of the emission lambdamax in the presence of these drugs.
