Bacterial infection triggers apoptosis and immunity by regulating the expression of caspases. In this article, we report two caspase-8 paralogs, termed ToCas8 and ToCas8-like, from an economically important teleost golden pompano (Trachinotus ovatus ...

Contending with animal bones (Editorial) [PDF]
[FIRST PARAGRAPH] This issue has been assembled in order to focus on some of the current directions in animal remains research. Since serious study of ancient animal remains began in the nineteenth century, this field and its specific areas of inquiry ...

We present the cellular transcription‐coupled Flp‐nick system allowing the introduction of a Top1‐mimicking cleavage complex (Flpcc) at a Flp recognition target site within a controllable LacZ gene. LacZ transcription leads to the collision of RNA polymerase II (RNAPII) with Flpcc, and this causes RNAPII stalling, ubiquitination, and degradation.

A novel platform for the production of nonhydroxylated gelatins based on the methylotrophic yeast Hansenula polymorpha [PDF]
The use of yeast as a host for heterologous expression of proteins that are normally derived from animal tissue is a promising way to ensure defined products that are devoid of potential harmful animal side products.

The reach of gene–culture coevolution in animals [PDF]
AbstractCulture (behaviour based on socially transmitted information) is present in diverse animal species, yet how it interacts with genetic evolution remains largely unexplored. Here, we review the evidence for gene–culture coevolution in animals, especially birds, cetaceans and primates. We describe how culture can relax or intensify selection under

Heart failure with preserved ejection fraction (HFpEF) accounts for half of the heart failure cases. It is characterised by microvascular dysfunction, associated with reduced pericyte coverage and diminished STAT3 expression in pericytes. Loss of STAT3 impairs pericyte adhesion, promotes senescence, and activates a pro‐fibrotic gene program.

The Evolution of Imitation Without Cultural Transmission [PDF]
The evolution and function of imitation have always been placed within the confines of animal learning and associated with its crucial role in cultural transmission and cultural evolution. Can imitation evolve as a form of phenotypic plasticity in the absence of cultural transmission, in phenotypes beyond behavior?

The biological concept of culture. The animal roots of human culture [PDF]
El objetivo del presente estudio es abordar el concepto de cultura desde el prisma de la biología evolutiva. Presento así, el concepto biológico de cultura tradicionalmente aceptado, o sea, el propuesto por J.
