Several animal species, mostly rodents, were described to exhibit spontaneously diabetes mellitus on a hereditary basis. These findings were highly appreciated with the expectation to get more insight into the pathogenesis of diabetes in humans. During the last few years since the discovery of leptin (Zhang et al.

Genetically modified animals and immunodeficiency
Current Opinion in Immunology, 1993Mouse strains with defined genetic defects engineered by the method of targeted gene disruption and homologous recombination have furthered our understanding of immune functions at the single gene level. More importantly, these mutant 'gene knockout' mice are powerful in vivo tools to dissect the complex mechanisms of lymphocyte development and ...

Patents for genetically modified animals
Journal of Animal Science, 1993Should genetically engineered animals be patented? This issue has been one of the most contentious as lawmakers have grappled with how best to protect intellectual property. Since the 1980 case of Diamond v. Chakrabarty, in which the U.S. Supreme Court ruled that a living microorganism is patentable, the U.S.

The genetics of alcohol consumption in animals
Biodemography and Social Biology, 1985Abstract This paper reviews animal studies of genetic differences in the consumption of alcohol. It deals with six areas: (1) field observations in nature; (2) selective breeding; (3) variation among inbred strains; (4) correlates of ethanol preference and avoidance; (5) consumption and sensitivity; and (6) a test of an ethanol intake control system ...

Population Genetics for Animal Conservation
2001It is widely accepted among conservation biologists that genetics is, more than ever, an essential and efficient tool for wild and captive population management and reserve design. However, a true synergy between population genetics and conservation biology is lacking.

A parallel solver for animal genetics
1998The use of linear multivariate mixed models in animal genetics, leads to very large, sparse linear systems of equations. The sparse, symmetric coefficient matrix is too large to be constructed explicitly. We describe a parallel, iterative linear equation solver for large sparse systems, developed by DIAS and UNI-C.

Genetic Studies of Atherosclerosis in Animals
1977Genetic factors may influence the extent of atherosclerosis by determining the degree of hypercholesterolemia resulting from the daily ingestion of a given amount of cholesterol, by determining the susceptibility of various arteries to the atherosclerotic process, by the co-existence of a primary dyslipoproteinemia or other “risk factor” diseases such ...

Naturalness and the genetic modification of animals
Trends in Biotechnology, 2003In the past few years it has been recognised that so-called intrinsic concerns about genetic modification (GM) of plants and animals, for food in particular, have an important role in the public perception of GM. One of these concerns is the view that GM is 'unnatural'.

Genetics and the Small Animal Veterinarian*
Journal of Small Animal Practice, 1971ABSTRACTThe various modes of inheritance are described and illustrated with canine examples. The information required to establish that a given anomaly is of genetic origin is stated, and the methods for reducing the incidence of hereditary diseases are discussed.Résumé.
