Relations between anisotropic diffusion and robust statistics are described in this paper. Specifically, we show that anisotropic diffusion can be seen as a robust estimation procedure that estimates a piecewise smooth image from a noisy input image. The "edge-stopping" function in the anisotropic diffusion equation is closely related to the error norm

Multigrid anisotropic diffusion
IEEE Transactions on Image Processing, 1998A multigrid anisotropic diffusion algorithm for image processing is presented. The multigrid implementation provides an efficient hierarchical relaxation method that facilitates the application of anisotropic diffusion to time-critical processes. Through a multigrid V-cycle, the anisotropic diffusion equations are successively transferred to coarser ...

Speckle reducing anisotropic diffusion
IEEE Transactions on Image Processing, 2002This paper provides the derivation of speckle reducing anisotropic diffusion (SRAD), a diffusion method tailored to ultrasonic and radar imaging applications. SRAD is the edge-sensitive diffusion for speckled images, in the same way that conventional anisotropic diffusion is the edge-sensitive diffusion for images corrupted with additive noise.

Anisotropic diffusion for image denoising based on diffusion tensors
Journal of Visual Communication and Image Representation, 2012In this paper, the anisotropic diffusion for image denoising is considered. A new method to construct diffusion tensors is proposed. The tensors obtained by our approach depend on four directional derivatives of the intensity of an image, and hence they are adaptively determined by local image structure.

Stabilized Anisotropic Diffusions
2007 IEEE International Conference on Acoustics, Speech and Signal Processing - ICASSP '07, 2007Anisotropic diffusion is an iterative process which provides efficient signal smoothing with feature preserving capabilities. However, the traditional anisotropic diffusion algorithms are highly sensitive to the number of iterations. In this paper, we introduce a novel method in the diffusion formulations to stabilize the diffusion results.

Morphological anisotropic diffusion
Proceedings of International Conference on Image Processing, 2002Current formulations of anisotropic diffusion are unable to prevent feature drift and smooth small regions. These deficiencies reduce the effectiveness of the diffusion operation in many image processing tasks, including segmentation, edge detection, compression, and multiscale processing.

This paper deals with the filtering and the enhancement of strongly oriented patterns. We propose a new filter combining scalar and tensor based diffusivities. The computation of an orientation confidence allows its to choose the best strategy to locally diffuse the gray levels.

Asymmetric anisotropic diffusion
2009 16th IEEE International Conference on Image Processing (ICIP), 2009We introduce a new anisotropic diffusion based approach for image filtering and enhancement. The main novelty of our method consists in considering a modulo 2π based definition of the diffusion axis along the main directions of the processed image. Such an asymmetric formulation of the filter induces better junction and corner preservation properties ...

Turbulent Anisotropic Diffusion in Fluids
ZAMM - Journal of Applied Mathematics and Mechanics / Zeitschrift für Angewandte Mathematik und Mechanik, 1975AbstractAnisotropic diffusion of a tracer in a turbulent medium is considered. Once the neighbour concentration has been calculated, the evaluation of the tracer's concentration may be obtained by series expansion in terms of orthonormal functions. The harmonic‐oscillator wave functions are suggested as a suitable choise.

A generalization of the regularized (in the sense of Catte, Lions, Morel and Coll) Perona-Malik anisotropic diffusion equation is proposed for image analysis. We present a numerical method for solving the above nonlinear degenerate diffusion problem, together with existence and convergence results. Numerical experiments are disscussed.
