Mechanochemical Synthesis and Characterization of Nanostructured ErB4 and NdB4 Rare‐Earth Tetraborides

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, Volume 27, Issue 6, March 2025.
ErB4 and NdB4 nanostructured powders are produced by mechanochemical synthesis. 5 h mechanical alloying and 4 M HCl acid leaching are used in the production. ErB4 and NdB4 powders exhibit maximum magnetization of 0.4726 emu g−1 accompanied with an antiferromagnetic‐to‐paramagnetic phase transition at about TN = 18 K and 0.132 emu g−1 with a maximum at ...

Pseudo-Analytical Modeling of Tilted-Coil Antennas in Anisotropic Geophysical Formations

open access: yesJournal of Microwaves, Optoelectronics and Electromagnetic Applications
In this paper we present an efficient mode-matching technique to analyze tilted-coil antennas in anisotropic geophysical formations. In this problem, a number of coil antennas with arbitrary relative tilt angle with respect to the symmetry axis are used ...

Electric-field-induced lifting of the valley degeneracy in alpha-(BEDT-TTF)_2I_3 Dirac-like Landau levels [PDF]

open access: yes, 2009
The relativistic Landau levels in the layered organic material alpha-(BEDT-TTF)_2I_3 [BEDT-TTF=bis(ethylenedithio)tetrathiafulvalene] are sensitive to the tilt of the Dirac cones, which, as in the case of graphene, determine the low-energy electronic ...

Evaluation of the Potential of Laser Shock Peening Compared with Cold Expansion for Improving Fatigue Resistance of Riveted Lap Joints of Aerospace Grade 7175 Al Alloy

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, EarlyView.
This study investigates laser shock peening for enhancing fatigue performance of riveted aerospace aluminum joints. A comparative approach with cold expansion combines fatigue testing and synchrotron X‐ray methods. Integrating mechanical testing with residual stress and strain characterization provides insights into how different treatments affect the ...

The Role of Bilayer Tilt Difference in Equilibrium Membrane Shapes [PDF]

open access: yes, 1996
Lipid bilayer membranes below their main transition have two tilt order parameters, corresponding to the two monolayers. These two tilts may be strongly coupled to membrane shape but only weakly coupled to each other. We discuss some implications of this

The Impact of High‐Productivity Processing on the Fatigue Failure of an Additive Manufactured Superalloy HAYNES 282

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, EarlyView.
The low cycle fatigue life of additive manufactured HAYNES® 282® superalloy was investigated for conventional and high‐productivity processing: samples of the former lasted 1400–1700 cycles, while samples of the latter failed at ~ 1200 cycles, at 760 °C and 1% strain.

Overcoming resolution attenuation during tilted cryo-EM data collection

open access: yesNature Communications
Structural biology efforts using cryogenic electron microscopy are frequently stifled by specimens adopting “preferred orientations” on grids, leading to anisotropic map resolution and impeding structure determination.

Effects of Crystal Orientation and Grain Boundary Inclination on Stress Distribution in Bicrystal Interface of Austenite Stainless Steel 316L

open access: yesAdvances in Materials Science and Engineering, 2019
Nuclear structural material austenitic stainless steel 316L is a polycrystalline composed of single crystals with a face-centered cubic (FCC) structure, and the intergranular stress corrosion cracking (IGSCC) is closely related to the crystal orientation.

The Disagreement between Anisotropic-Isotropic Diffuse Solar Radiation Models as a Function of Solar Declination: Computing the Optimum Tilt Angle of Solar Panels in the Area of Southern-Italy

open access: yesSmart Grid and Renewable Energy, 2012
In this paper a simulation to maximize the global solar radiation on a sloped collecting surface was applied to typical latitudes in the area of southern Italy, to calculate the optimum tilt angle of solar panels on building structures or large photovoltaic power plants located in that geographical area.
