PERIODIZING GEOLOGICALLY OUTWITH (AND WITHOUT?) THE ANTHROPOCENE: PASTS, AGENCIES, AND THE TERRESTRIAL

open access: yesHistory and Theory, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT As a periodization that is generally understood to refer to an era of Terrestrial relationships that developed with modernization and nuclearization, the Anthropocene cannot be applied simply to premodern histories and texts. However, it has introduced historians to geological periodization as a mode of describing periods of changed ...

Comparing species accumulation within taxonomically well‐ and poorly resolved insect groups over 37 years

open access: yesInsect Conservation and Diversity, EarlyView.
Here, we used a unique 37‐year (1969–2006) freshwater macroinvertebrate time‐series, collected over seven sites in central Germany, to study biodiversity patterns and species accumulation over time. Accumulation curves of Diptera diversity have not reached a plateau in 37 years of sampling.

Dispersal mediates metapopulation response to local and regional stressors

open access: yesInsect Conservation and Diversity, EarlyView.
A feature of recent insect declines is that widespread, formerly common species are among the worst affected. We designed a metapopulation simulation to ask how dispersal capability interacts with landscape and population stressors that act at different spatial scales.

Interpreting Barth's Eschatology: An Eco‐Theological Reappraisal

open access: yesInternational Journal of Systematic Theology, EarlyView.
Abstract Critical eco‐theologians do not consider Karl Barth's theology of creation helpful in addressing the contemporary ecological crisis. In this article, I explore a way to interpret Barth's theology that could lead to a fruitful eco‐theological perspective.

Giants in the cold: Morphological evidence for vascular heat retention in the viscera but not the skeletal muscle of the basking shark (Cetorhinus maximus)

open access: yesJournal of Fish Biology, EarlyView.
Abstract Fewer than 50 of the over 30,000 extant species of fishes have developed anatomical specializations facilitating endothermy in specific body regions. The plankton‐feeding basking shark (Cetorhinus maximus), traditionally classified as an ectotherm, was recently shown to have regionally endothermic traits such as centralized red muscle (RM ...

Visualizing the Role of Midwives in Planetary Health: A Proposed Graphic Model

open access: yesJournal of Midwifery &Women's Health, EarlyView.
Abstract Climate change and ecological degradation pose growing threats to public health, with profound consequences for birthing individuals and fetal and newborn outcomes. Planetary health provides a framework for understanding the interdependence between environmental systems and human well‐being, underscoring the responsibility of health care ...
