최근 ‘반지성주의(anti-intellectualism)’라는 말이 널리 쓰이고 있지만, 이 개념의 정체는 매우 불투명해 적잖은 혼란을 낳고 있다. 이 글은 반지성주의를 이념의 좌우를 막론하고 적용하는 가치중립적 개념이자 특정 언행에 적용하는 미시적 개념으로 쓸 것을 제안한다. 그런 두가지 전제와 더불어 반지성주의를 지성의 유무나 정도가 아니라 지성의 작용방식을 기준으로 “이성적 · 합리적 소통을 수용하지 않는 정신상태나 태도”로 정의하면서 그 3대 요소로 신앙적 확신, 성찰 불능, 적대적 표현을 제시한다.
