Anti-trypanosomal activities of DNA topoisomerase inhibitors

Acta Tropica, 2005
Only four drugs are available for chemotherapy of human African sleeping sickness with undesirable toxic side effects. The development of new anti-trypanosomal drugs is, therefore, urgently required. In this study, 15 DNA topoisomerase inhibitors, including approved anti-cancer drugs, were tested for in vitro activity against bloodstream forms of ...

Anti-trypanosomal activity of cationic N-heterocyclic carbene gold(I) complexes.

Molecular and Biochemical Parasitology, 2017
Two gold(I) N-heterocyclic carbene complexes 1a and 1b were tested for their anti-trypanosomal activity against Trypanosoma brucei parasites. Both gold compounds exhibited excellent anti-trypanosomal activity (IC50=0.9-3.0nM). The effects of the gold complexes 1a and 1b on the T. b. brucei cytoskeleton were evaluated.

Anti-trypanosomal activity of African medicinal plants: a review update.

Journal of Ethnopharmacology, 2014
African trypanosomiasis is one of the neglected tropical diseases caused by different species of trypanosomes that affect both human and livestock with devastating consequences in the continent. Most of the affected populations commonly use traditional medicinal plants for the treatment of the disease.

Anti-trypanosomal activity of helenalin and some structurally related sesquiterpene lactones.

Planta Medica, 2002
The anti-trypanosomal activity of six sesquiterpene lactones (helenalin, mexicanin I, 11alpha,13-dihydrohelenalin acetate, chamissonolide, ivalin and isoalantolactone) against the African Trypanosoma brucei rhodesiense and American T. cruzi was investigated.

Evaluation of the Anti-Trypanosomal Activity of Tyropeptin A

Planta Medica, 2006
The natural compound tyropeptin A, a new peptidyl aldehyde proteasome inhibitor, was tested for its trypanocidal activity in vitro using culture-adapted bloodstream forms of Trypanosoma brucei. The concentrations of tyropeptin A required to reduce the growth rate by 50 % and to kill all cells were 10 and 100 times lower for bloodstream-form ...

Anti‐trypanosomal activity of Alchornia cordifolia

Phytotherapy Research, 1987
AbstractExtracts of the leaves and fruits of Alchornia cordifolia (ACL2 and ACF2) were found to inhibit the growth of Trypanosoma brucei brucei in rats. Purification of ACL2 and ACF2 yielded fractions ACL3, ACL4 and ACF3, ACF4, respectively, which were inactive. However fractions ACF3 and ACF4 were found to be toxic in rats.

Anti-trypanosomal Activity of Leaf Extracts of Andrographis paniculata in Trypanosoma brucei brucei-infected Mice

Nigerian Journal of Parasitology
African Animal Trypanosomiasis is a disease of major economic and public health importance, especially with the current setback in the  treatment of cases using synthetic anti-trypanosomal agents.

New anti-trypanosomal active prenylated compounds from African propolis

Phytochemistry Letters, 2014
The secondary metabolite composition of propolis has always been corroborated on the vegetation surrounding the bee hive. The plants chosen by the bees seem to exhibit activity to protect the hive from the surrounding environmental pressures which include protozoal attack. Two new stilbene compounds were isolated from Ghanian propolis which were formed

Computer assisted design of potentially active anti-trypanosomal compounds

Journal of Molecular Structure: THEOCHEM, 2002
Abstract A computer assisted molecular modeling was used to design molecules having a shape complementary to the active site of glutathione reductase (GR) and trypanothione reductase (TR). The designed 5-nitro compound derivatives, were obtained from structural knowledge gleaned on glutathione (GSSG), trypanothione (T[S]2) and GSP disulfide ...

Anti-trypanosomal activities and structural chemical properties of selected compound classes

Parasitology Research, 2014
Potent compounds do not necessarily make the best drugs in the market. Consequently, with the aim to describe tools that may be fundamental for refining the screening of candidates for animal and preclinical studies and further development, molecules of different structural classes synthesized within the frame of a broad screening platform were ...
