Antibodies to protozoan variable surface antigens induce antigenic variation

2022
AbstractThe genomes of most protozoa encode families of variant surface antigens, whose mutually exclusive changes in expression allow parasitic microorganisms to evade the host immune response1,2. It is widely assumed that antigenic variation in protozoan parasites is accomplished by the spontaneous appearance within the population of cells expressing

ANTIBODY‐INDUCED MOVEMENT OF PROTOZOAN SURFACE MEMBRANE ANTIGENS*

Annals of the New York Academy of Sciences, 1975
Direct and indirect immunofluorescence techniques were used to study the effects of host antibodies on surface membrane antigens of viable Leishmania parasites in vitro. Antisera to L. enriettii and L. tropica caused surface membrane antigens of these parasites to aggregate, move toward the poles of the parasite, and to eventually disappear.

Use of Hybridoma Antibodies and Recombinant DNA Technology in Protozoan Vaccine Development

Avian Diseases, 1986
The use of hybridoma antibodies developed against the sporozoite stage of avian coccidia, coupled with genetic-engineering techniques, has made it possible to begin bird-immunization studies utilizing an Escherichia coli-elicited coccidial protein. The coccidia are currently controlled in the poultry industry by use of anticoccidial compounds, but it ...

Induction of Tolerance to an Intracellular Protozoan (Toxoplasma Gondii) by Passively Administered Antibody

The Journal of Immunology, 1974
Abstract The humoral antibody response to infection with the intracellular protozoan Toxoplasma gondii was suppressed in adult mice that had been injected with antiserum formed against the same parasite. A small proportion of the mice developed a state of tolerance to Toxoplasma, demonstrable by the absence of Toxoplasma antibody in ...
