Suppressive Antigen-Presenting Cells in Helminth Infection

Pathobiology, 1999
Infection with filarial nematodes is commonly associated with a failure of T cells to proliferate in response to parasite antigen. We have investigated the possibility that antigen-presenting cells recruited during filarial infection are responsible for impairment of T cell function. We have found that the human filarial parasite <i>Brugia malayi,

Characterization of the carcinoma-associated Tk antigen in helminth parasites

Experimental Parasitology, 2007
Expression of Tk antigen, a truncated carbohydrate antigen, was examined in helmith parasites. Using the monoclonal antibody LM389, this antigen was detected in extracts from Taenia hydatigena, Mesocestoides vogae (syn corti), and Taenia crassiceps.

IMMUNITY, ANTIGENIC HETEROGENEITY, AND AGGREGATION OF HELMINTH PARASITES

Journal of Parasitology, 2003
Empirical studies of helminth parasites reveal that the distribution of parasite burdens in their host populations is highly aggregated. This aggregation is fundamental to the ecology and epidemiology of helminth parasites. Results from a stochastic model predict that aggregation of helminth parasites is inversely related to the intensity of host ...

Immunologic responses to common antigens in helminthic infections and allergic disease

Current Opinion in Allergy & Clinical Immunology, 2005
It is estimated that over 1 billion individuals are infected with helminth parasites worldwide. Epidemiologic studies have pointed to a protective role of helminthic infections in the development of allergy and asthma; however, evidence for this inverse association has not been consistently established.

Therapeutic Potential of Helminths and Helminth-Derived Antigens for Resolution of Inflammation in Inflammatory Bowel Disease

Archives of Medical Research, 2019
Inflammation plays a pivotal role in the pathogenesis of inflammatory bowel disease (IBD), and treatment of IBD mainly targets on inhibition of pro-inflammatory mediators. Helminth-based therapy is a novel strategy for resolution of inflammation in IBD, because helminths have great immunomodulatory properties.

Modulation of human dendritic cell activity by Giardia and helminth antigens

Parasite Immunology, 2018
SummaryGiardia duodenalis is a common intestinal protozoan parasite known to modulate host immune responses, including dendritic cell (DC) function. Coinfections of intestinal pathogens are common, and thus, DCs may be concurrently exposed to antigens from multiple parasites. Here, we investigated the effects of G. duodenalis products on human monocyte‐

Regulatory B cell development by helminth-derived antigens

5.3 Allergy and Immunology, 2015
Infection with the helminth Schistosoma mansoni drives the development of IL-10-producing regulatory B cells (Breg cells) which suppress experimental allergic airway inflammation. Here we investigated whether schistosomal egg antigens (SEA) directly interact with B cells and induce development of IL-10-producing Breg cells.

Antigen-Antibody Reactions in Helminth Infections

1963
Publisher Summary Work on the antigen-antibody reactions in helminth infections has involved a wide range of mammalian species as hosts and has also included almost the complete range of parasitic helminths. Nevertheless, despite their large size and multifarious migrations, the helminths generally stimulate satisfactory immune responses that can be ...

Chemoenzymatic synthesis of multivalent neoglycoconjugates carrying the helminth glycan antigen LDNF

Carbohydrate Research, 2009
Several parasitic helminthes, such as the human parasite Schistosoma mansoni, express glycoconjugates that contain terminal GalNAc beta1-4(Fuc alpha1-3)GlcNAc beta-R (LDNF) moieties. These LDNF glycans are dominant antigens of the parasite and are recognized by human dendritic cells via the C-type lectin DC-SIGN.

The Preparation of Helminth Antigen from Fresh Bunostomum trigonocephalum

Journal of Helminthology, 1954
A satisfactory antigen for use in serological studies of nematodiasis in sheep has been prepared from Bunostomum trigonocephalum. The investigations are outlined and a method for its routine preparation from field material is described.
