Decreased cold‐sensing function of the transient receptor potential channel TRPM8 from tailed amphibians

open access: yesFEBS Open Bio, EarlyView.
Despite frogs avoiding low temperatures, examination of four salamander species revealed that none avoided cold and all possessed cold tolerance. Functional analysis of TRPM8, a cold sensor, showed that all salamander TRPM8s had lost their cold sensitivity.

Cloning, characterization, and evolutionary patterns of KCNQ4 genes in anurans

open access: yesEcology and Evolution
Acoustic communication plays important roles in the survival and reproduction of anurans. The perception and discrimination of conspecific sound signals of anurans were always affected by masking background noise.

Long‐term monitoring of tropical alpine habitat change, Andean anurans, and chytrid fungus in the Cordillera Vilcanota, Peru: Results from a decade of study

open access: yesEcology and Evolution, 2017
The Cordillera Vilcanota in southern Peru is the second largest glacierized range in the tropics and home to one of the largest high‐alpine lakes, Sibinacocha (4,860 m). Here, Telmatobius marmoratus (marbled water frog), Rhinella spinulosa (Andean toad),

Biodiversity Monitoring of a Riparian Wetland in a Mixed-Use Watershed in the Central Appalachians, USA, before Restoration

open access: yesDiversity, 2022
Wetland mitigation efforts have increased in numbers over the past two decades to combat wetland loss in the United States. Data regarding wetland function such as biodiversity are required to be collected 5–10 years after a project is complete; however,

South American Anurans: Species Diversity and Description Trends Through Time and Space

open access: yes, 2019
Amphibians are especially diverse in the Neotropics and have also one of the highest rates of new species description among terrestrial vertebrates. The first systematic synthesis of South American anurans compiled a list of 1644 species, but there have ...

A Depolarizing Leak in Sodium Bicarbonate Cotransporter NBCe1 Causes Brain Edema

open access: yesAnnals of Clinical and Translational Neurology, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT Objectives SLC4A4 encodes electrogenic sodium bicarbonate cotransporter NBCe1, prominently expressed in kidney and brain. Recessive loss‐of‐function variants in SLC4A4 cause proximal renal tubular acidosis, no brain edema. In the brain, NBCe1 is expressed by astrocytes, where it regulates pH and mediates astrocyte volume changes.

Regeneration in Hypophysectomized Anuran Tadpoles.

open access: yesExperimental Biology and Medicine, 1960
Summary1. A comparison was made between regenerating tail-tips in normal and hypophysectomized Rana pipiens tadpoles. 2. No significant differences were noted in amount of regeneration/unit time or in the histology of regenerates. 3. Age of the hypophysectomized animal had no discernible effect on tail-tip regeneration. 4.

An Overview of the Ilium of Anurans (Lissamphibia, Salientia), with a Critical Appraisal of the Terminology and Primary Homology of Main Ilial Features

open access: yesJournal of Vertebrate Paleontology, 2016
The ilium has been considered a ‘key’ element in anuran paleontology, but its terminology is inconsistent across the literature. Therefore, we here review the terminology used so far to describe anuran ilia and provide an annotated glossary of main ilial

Designable van der Waals Crystal for Artificial Neuronal Cell Mimicking

open access: yesAdvanced Materials, EarlyView.
Designable van der Waals crystal has been demonstrated for device‐scale neuronal cell mimicking. The structural similarity between ion‐channel in biological membranes and layered vdW lattices is realized with nano‐crystallization via Ar + H2S plasma sulfurization.
