Establishment of rat model for aspiration pneumonia and potential mechanisms
Aspiration pneumonia was induced in Sprague Dawley rats by intratracheal instillation of hydrochloric acid (HCl, 1.5 μL/g.wt, pH = 1) followed by lipopolysaccharide (LPS, 20 μg/g.wt) after 1 h. The model reproduced hallmark features of acute lung injury, including histological lung damage, microvascular dysfunction, inflammation, hypoxemia, and ...

Unilateral, minimally invasive, renal arterial embolization and delayed contralateral nephrectomy was described in cats as a novel remnant kidney model of chronic kidney disease using two doses of embolic particles. Renal function declined and characteristic histopathological markers of kidney disease were present 6 months after the embolism procedure.

3D convolutional neural network for abdominal aortic aneurysm segmentation [PDF]
An abdominal aortic aneurysm (AAA) is a focal dilation of the aorta that, if not treated, tends to grow and may rupture. A significant unmet need in the assessment of AAA disease, for the diagnosis, prognosis and follow-up, is the determination of rupture risk, which is currently based on the manual measurement of the aneurysm diameter in a selected ...

Objective Parkinson's and Huntington's diseases are characterized by progressive neuronal loss. Previous studies using human postmortem tissues have shown the impact of neurodegenerative disorders on adult neurogenesis. The extent to which adult neural stem cells are activated in the subventricular zone and whether therapeutic treatments such as deep ...

Chemical Proteomics Reveals Human Off‐Targets of Fluoroquinolone Induced Mitochondrial Toxicity
A schematic overview of the adverse effects of Ciprofloxacin related to mitochondrial toxicity. AIFM1 plays a role in the MIA40‐mediated import into the IMS and oxidative folding of nuclear‐encoded proteins, including ETC complexes I and IV subunits. Ciprofloxacin disrupts the IMS import machinery, impairing ETC function.

Sarcopenia ‘made simple’ and outcomes from emergency laparotomy
CT‐assessed ratio of L3 vertebral body cross‐sectional area to total psoas muscle cross‐sectional area (L3:PM) is a simple yet significant predictor of 30‐, 90‐ and 365‐day mortality in emergency laparotomy patients. This study is the first to describe the association in an Australian population.
