Supplemental Digital Content is available in the text. Objective: Leaflet thickening, fibrosis, and hardening are early pathological features of calcific aortic valve disease (CAVD). An inadequate understanding of the resident aortic valve cells involved

The phyllotaxis of the aortic valve
Biological systems ubiquitously and inevitably exhibit stochasticity in traits from the molecular level to the multicellular and morphological level. However, there are several examples of natural events that might be described in mathematical terms. Plants grow in a structured and geometric way to maximize their sun exposure for photosynthesis while ...

Intermediate-Term Risk of Stroke Following Cardiac Procedures in a Nationally Representative Data Set. [PDF]
BACKGROUND: Studies on stroke risk following cardiac procedures addressed only perioperative and long-term risk following limited higher-risk procedures, were poorly generalizable, and often failed to stratify by stroke type. We calculated stroke risk in

Aortic valve stenosis is the most prevalent heart valve disease worldwide. Although interventional treatment options have rapidly improved in recent years, symptomatic aortic valve stenosis is still associated with high morbidity and mortality.

A Bayesian homogeneity test for comparing Poisson populations
Abstract For a wide class of daily applications in industrial quality control, there may be interest in comparing several Poisson means. A large catalogue of frequentist procedures for this hypothesis testing problem is available. However, some common drawbacks of them are their low power, interpretation of the p$$ p $$‐values for multiple comparison ...

Aortic valve repair and aortic valve–sparing operations [PDF]
Attempts to correct aortic insufficiency by means of aortic valve repair started soon after the advent of open-chest cardiac surgery. Correction of cusp prolapse was performed by suturing the free margins of 2 cusps from the commissures to the central portion or by excising the noncoronary aortic cusp and sinus, transforming a tricuspid into a bicuspid

Transcatheter Aortic Valve Replacement in Low-risk Patients With Bicuspid Aortic Valve Stenosis.
Importance The outcomes of transcatheter aortic valve replacement (TAVR) in low-risk patients with bicuspid aortic valve stenosis have not been studied in a large scale, multicentered, prospective fashion.

Aortic stenosis (AS) in bicuspid aortic valve (BAV) remains a challenge for transcatheter aortic valve implantation (TAVI). BAV is a condition encountered in young adults as well as elderly patients. Frequently we face in clinical practice elderly patients with BAV and severe AS, but there is little evidence concerning TAVI in this population.

Use of Aortic Valve Homografts for Aortic Valve Replacement [PDF]
One hundred sixty-nine patients underwent replacement of the aortic valve with an aortic valve homograft; of these patients 17 had concomitant commissurotomy or annuloplasty for an associated mitral valve lesion. Homografts were prepared by sterilization with beta-propiolactone solution and stored in Hanks' solution, or were prepared by sterilization ...

Surgical management of aortic root disease in Marfan syndrome and other congenital disorders associated with aortic root aneurysms [PDF]
Elective root replacement in Marfan syndrome has improved life expectancy in affected patients. Three forms of surgery are now available: total root replacement (TRR) with a valved conduit, valve sparing root replacement (VSRR) and personalised external ...
