Nutritional evaluation of single-cell protein produced by Aphanothece microscopica Nägeli

open access: yesBioresource Technology, 2010
The aim of this research was to evaluate the nutritional characteristics of Aphanothece microscopica Nägeli microalgae developed in the effluent of parboiled rice. The biomass was biologically evaluated by rat growth, during 10 days for nitrogen balance studies and 28 days for blood analysis.

Adaptive Responses of Cyanobacteria to Phosphate Limitation: A Focus on Marine Diazotrophs

open access: yesEnvironmental Microbiology, Volume 26, Issue 12, December 2024.
Marine diazotrophic cyanobacteria, which are essential for atmospheric nitrogen fixation in low‐nutrient oceans, have developed various strategies to survive under phosphate (Pi) limitation by using high‐affinity transporters and enzymes that break down dissolved organic phosphorus (DOP).

Characterization of Nitrogen-Fixing Cyanobacterial Consortia Isolated from the Rhizosphere of Carica papaya

open access: yesAgronomy
Nitrogen-fixing cyanobacterial consortia are an alternative to the indiscriminate use of chemical fertilizers that affect the environment, fix atmospheric nitrogen, and can therefore be used as plant growth promoters, synthesize various substances such ...

Polyphosphate phosphorus in the Great Lakes

open access: yesLimnology and Oceanography Letters, Volume 9, Issue 5, Page 602-611, October 2024.
Abstract Polyphosphate (polyP) is important to phytoplankton ecology, but a unified view of its variability and roles in ecosystem‐scale phosphorus (P) cycling is lacking. We study polyP in the world's largest freshwater ecosystem, the Laurentian Great Lakes, covering pelagic to nearshore areas across a wide nutrient gradient.

Sacrolide A, a new antimicrobial and cytotoxic oxylipin macrolide from the edible cyanobacterium Aphanothece sacrum

open access: yesBeilstein Journal of Organic Chemistry, 2014
Macroscopic gelatinous colonies of freshwater cyanobacterium Aphanothece sacrum, a luxury ingredient for Japanese cuisine, were found to contain a new oxylipin-derived macrolide, sacrolide A (1), as an antimicrobial component.

Colony‐forming and single‐cell picocyanobacteria nitrogen acquisition strategies and carbon fixation in the brackish Baltic Sea

open access: yesLimnology and Oceanography, Volume 69, Issue 9, Page 1955-1969, September 2024.
Abstract Picocyanobacteria are widespread and globally significant primary producers. In brackish waters, picocyanobacterial populations are composed of diverse species with both single‐cell and colony‐forming lifestyles. Compared to their marine counterparts, brackish picocyanobacteria are less well characterized and the focus of research has been ...

Bacterial community and cyanotoxin gene distribution of the Winam Gulf, Lake Victoria, Kenya

open access: yesEnvironmental Microbiology Reports, Volume 16, Issue 3, June 2024.
This work identified cyanobacterial community and cyanotoxin gene distribution in the Winam Gulf, Lake Victoria, Kenya. Cyanobacterial communities clustered in line with different areas of the Gulf, while cyanotoxin gene concentrations varied between the eastern and western regions.

Crocosphaera watsonii – A widespread nitrogen‐fixing unicellular marine cyanobacterium

open access: yesJournal of Phycology, Volume 60, Issue 3, Page 604-620, June 2024.
Abstract Crocosphaera watsonii is a unicellular N2‐fixing (diazotrophic) cyanobacterium observed in tropical and subtropical oligotrophic oceans. As a diazotroph, it can be a source of bioavailable nitrogen (N) to the microbial community in N‐limited environments, and this may fuel primary production in the regions where it occurs.

Diversity and toxin content of cyanobacteria in fish ponds (South Moravia, Czech Republic) related to fishery management intensity

open access: yesActa Universitatis Agriculturae et Silviculturae Mendelianae Brunensis, 2008
During the vegetative period of the year 2005 (June–October) we carried out hydrobiological and hydrochemical monitoring of selected ponds inhered in Southern Moravia in relation to different fishery management intensities. Water temperature, dissolved
