Improved preparation of (e)-beta-farnesene and its activity with economically important aphids

open access: yes, 1982
(E)-β-Farnesene, the major component of the alarm pheromone of many aphids, is prepared in 65% yield by passing commercial nerolidol through an evacuated column of alumina, treated with pyridine, at 200° C.

Drought stress modulates indirect defense via bottom‐up effects in tomato and wheat

open access: yesPest Management Science, EarlyView.
Different water regimes can have a significant impact on plant morphology and defense pathways in tomato and wheat, triggering multiple olfactory choices in biocontrol agents of key insect pests. These findings could be used to implement biocontrol strategies within the IPM context under a changing climate scenario.

The effect of different host plants of potato virus c in determining its transmission by aphids

open access: yes, 1956
A stock of potato virus C derived from Edgecote Purple potatoes in 1945 was not then transmitted by aphids, although more than 2000 aphids were used in conditions optimal for transmitting the serologically related potato virus Y. Thisstock of virus C has

Microbiome‐mediated chemical communication in insects: Implications for pest management

open access: yesPest Management Science, EarlyView.
Microbiome–semiochemical interactions involve the following processes: direct microbial synthesis, host gene regulation, precursor biotransformation, microbiome modulation and indirect ecological signaling. Abstract Insects rely on semiochemicals to regulate aggregation, mating, foraging, and host selection. This review synthesizes evidence that insect‐

Patterns of density dependence in moths and aphids

open access: yes, 1992
1. The incidence of density dependence was examined in 5715 time-series of annual abundances of 447 species of moths and aphids in the UK using three techniques (Ricker equation, Bulmer's test and Pollard et al.'s test). 2.

Pesticide use in integrated pest and pollinator management framework to protect pollinator health

open access: yesPest Management Science, Volume 81, Issue 4, Page 1691-1696, April 2025.
Integrated pest management (IPM) emphasizes non‐chemical methods, with pesticides as a last resort, while integrated pest and pollinator management (IPPM) integrates pollinator health into pest control strategies. Abstract Agricultural pesticides have historically been a critical tool in controlling pests and diseases, preventing widespread suffering ...

Analogous pleiotropic effects of insecticide resistance genotypes in peach-potato aphids and houseflies

open access: yes, 2003
We show that single-point mutations conferring target-site resistance (kdr) to pyrethroids and DDT in aphids and houseflies, and gene amplification conferring metabolic resistance (carboxylesterase) to organophosphates and carbamates in aphids, can have ...

First record of Takecallis taiwana (Takahashi) and T. arundinariae (Essig) (Hemiptera: Aphididae) in Colombia

open access: yesAgronomía Colombiana, 2016
The aphids Takecallis taiwana (Takahashi, 1926) and T. arundinariae (Essig, 1917) were collected from two locations in the Department of Cundinamarca (Colombia) and one location within 90 km of the city of Bogota on plants of the Phyllostachys sp ...

Single and dual RPA‐CRISPR/Cas assays for point‐of‐need detection of Stewart's wilt pathogen (Pantoea stewartii subsp. stewartii) of corn and Maize dwarf mosaic virus

open access: yesPest Management Science, Volume 81, Issue 4, Page 1988-1999, April 2025.
Schematic diagram of the single and dual RPA‐CRISPR/Cas12a/13a diagnostic assays for the detection of Pantoea stewartii subsp. stewartii and Maize dwarf mosaic virus. The validated assays provide a useful and sensitive molecular tool for detecting two quarantine pathogens of maize within a minimal resource framework suitable for fast‐tracking the ...
