Skipping sex: A nonrecombinant genomic assemblage of complementary reproductive modules

open access: yesBioEssays, Volume 43, Issue 1, January 2021., 2021
Asexuality arises through developmental alterations with apparently unrelated origins. We show the occurrence of asexual animals and plants have a common genetic and developmental basis on a single nonrecombinant assemblage of genomic elements altering complementary reproductive modules.

Harnessing wild relatives of pearl millet for germplasm enhancement: Challenges and opportunities

open access: yesCrop Science, Volume 61, Issue 1, Page 177-200, January/February 2021., 2021
Abstract Pearl millet [Pennisetum glaucum (L.) R. Br.] is one of the world's hardiest warm‐season cereal crop and is cultivated mainly in the semi‐arid tropics of Asia and Africa for food, feed, fodder, and brewing. It is mainly cultivated for its gluten‐free grains with high content and better quality of nutrients.

Evolution of the apomixis transmitting chromosome in Pennisetum

open access: yesBMC Evolutionary Biology, 2011
Background Apomixis is an intriguing trait in plants that results in maternal clones through seed reproduction. Apomixis is an elusive, but potentially revolutionary, trait for plant breeding and hybrid seed production.

Pistil transcriptome analysis to disclose genes and gene products related to aposporous apomixis in Hypericum perforatum L. [PDF]

open access: yes, 2017
Unlike sexual reproduction, apomixis encompasses a number of reproductive strategies, which permit maternal genome inheritance without genetic recombination and syngamy.

Chromosomal Evolution and Apomixis in the Cruciferous Tribe Boechereae

open access: yesFrontiers in Plant Science, 2020
The mustard family (Brassicaceae) comprises several dozen monophyletic clades usually ranked as tribes. The tribe Boechereae plays a prominent role in plant research due to the incidence of apomixis and its close relationship to Arabidopsis.

Temporal and spatial expression of genes involved in DNA methylation during reproductive development of sexual and apomictic Eragrostis curvula [PDF]

open access: yes, 2017
Recent reports in model plant species have highlighted a role for DNA methylation pathways in the regulation of the somatic-to-reproductive transition in the ovule, suggesting that apomixis (asexual reproduction through seeds) likely relies on RdDM ...

A Plant-Specific TGS1 Homolog Influences Gametophyte Development in Sexual Tetraploid Paspalum notatum Ovules

open access: yesFrontiers in Plant Science, 2019
Aposporous apomictic plants form clonal maternal seeds by inducing the emergence of non-reduced (2n) embryo sacs in the ovule nucellus and the development of embryos by parthenogenesis.

Analysis of variation for apomictic reproduction in diploid Paspalum rufum [PDF]

open access: yes, 2014
Background and Aims: The diploid cytotype of Paspalum rufum (Poaceae) reproduces sexually and is self-sterile; however, recurrent autopolyploidization through 2n + n fertilization and the ability for reproduction via apomixis have been documented in one ...

In vitro culture and apogamy: Alternative pathway in the life cycle of the moss Amblystegium serpens (Amblystegiaceae) [PDF]

open access: yes, 2005
In vitro culture of the moss Amblystegium serpens (Amblystegiaceae) was established on hormone-free Murashige and Skoog (MS) medium that contained a half amount of MS micro- and macro- mineral salts and vitamins, 100 mg/l myoinositol, 30 g/l sucrose, and

A unique life cycle transition in the red seaweed Pyropia yezoensis depends on apospory

open access: yesCommunications Biology, 2019
Plant life cycles consist of two temporally separated stages: a haploid gametophyte and a diploid sporophyte. In plants employing a haploid–diploid sexual life cycle, the transition from sporophyte to gametophyte generally depends on meiosis.
