Barkhausen noise in the Random Field Ising Magnet Nd$_2$Fe$_{14}$B [PDF]

open access: yes, 2015
With sintered needles aligned and a magnetic field applied transverse to its easy axis, the rare-earth ferromagnet Nd$_2$Fe$_{14}$B becomes a room-temperature realization of the Random Field Ising Model.

Structural instability impairs function of the UDP‐xylose synthase 1 Ile181Asn variant associated with short‐stature genetic syndrome in humans

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
The Ile181Asn variant of human UDP‐xylose synthase (hUXS1), associated with a short‐stature genetic syndrome, has previously been reported as inactive. Our findings demonstrate that Ile181Asn‐hUXS1 retains catalytic activity similar to the wild‐type but exhibits reduced stability, a looser oligomeric state, and an increased tendency to precipitate ...

B. F. Skinner’s legacy twenty years after (1990-2010): Behavior analysis in Ibero-America

open access: yesAvances en Psicología Latinoamericana, 2010
Twenty years after his death (August 18th 1990),B. F. Skinner leaves five major living legacies: 1)radical behaviorism; 2) the experimental analysis ofbehavior; 3) applied behavior analysis; 4) the Skinnerbox; 5) the Horcones community (Mexico).Behavior ...

Beyond Revealed Preference Choice Theoretic Foundations for Behavioral Welfare Economics [PDF]

open access: yes
This paper proposes a choice-theoretic framework for evaluating economic welfare with the following features. (1) It is applicable irrespective of the positive model used to describe behavior.

Inhibiting stearoyl‐CoA desaturase suppresses bone metastatic prostate cancer by modulating cellular stress, mTOR signaling, and DNA damage response

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Bone metastasis in prostate cancer (PCa) patients is a clinical hurdle due to the poor understanding of the supportive bone microenvironment. Here, we identify stearoyl‐CoA desaturase (SCD) as a tumor‐promoting enzyme and potential therapeutic target in bone metastatic PCa.

The (Glg)ABCs of cyanobacteria: modelling of glycogen synthesis and functional divergence of glycogen synthases in Synechocystis sp. PCC 6803

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
We reconstituted Synechocystis glycogen synthesis in vitro from purified enzymes and showed that two GlgA isoenzymes produce glycogen with different architectures: GlgA1 yields denser, highly branched glycogen, whereas GlgA2 synthesizes longer, less‐branched chains.

Structural biology of ferritin nanocages

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Ferritin is a conserved iron‐storage protein that sequesters iron as a ferric mineral core within a nanocage, protecting cells from oxidative damage and maintaining iron homeostasis. This review discusses ferritin biology, structure, and function, and highlights recent cryo‐EM studies revealing mechanisms of ferritinophagy, cellular iron uptake, and ...

From philosophy to algorithms: a commentary on the evolution of human behavior and the role of artificial intelligence

open access: yesDiscover Artificial Intelligence
Background This commentary explores the evolution of how human behavior has been understood, from classical philosophical theories to modern applications in Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA), focusing on the emerging role of Artificial Intelligence (AI ...

Organ‐specific redox imbalances in spinal muscular atrophy mice are partially rescued by SMN antisense oligonucleotides

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
We identified a systemic, progressive loss of protein S‐glutathionylation—detected by nonreducing western blotting—alongside dysregulation of glutathione‐cycle enzymes in both neuronal and peripheral tissues of Taiwanese SMA mice. These alterations were partially rescued by SMN antisense oligonucleotide therapy, revealing persistent redox imbalance as ...
