Teaching Stats for Data Science [PDF]

open access: yes, 2017
“Data science” is a useful catchword for methods and concepts original to the field of statistics, but typically being applied to large, multivariate, observational records.

Organ‐specific redox imbalances in spinal muscular atrophy mice are partially rescued by SMN antisense oligonucleotides

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
We identified a systemic, progressive loss of protein S‐glutathionylation—detected by nonreducing western blotting—alongside dysregulation of glutathione‐cycle enzymes in both neuronal and peripheral tissues of Taiwanese SMA mice. These alterations were partially rescued by SMN antisense oligonucleotide therapy, revealing persistent redox imbalance as ...

Bayesian Approach for Counting Experiment Statistics applied to a Neutrino Point Source Analysis

open access: yes, 2013
In this paper we present a model independent analysis method following Bayesian statistics to analyse data from a generic counting experiment and apply it to the search for neutrinos from point sources.

Transferrin receptor 1‐mediated iron uptake supports thermogenic activation in human cervical‐derived adipocytes

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
In this study, we found that human cervical‐derived adipocytes maintain intracellular iron level by regulating the expression of iron transport‐related proteins during adrenergic stimulation. Melanotransferrin is predicted to interact with transferrin receptor 1 based on in silico analysis.

Statistics applied to plant micropropagation: a critical review of inadequate use

open access: yesBioscience Journal, 2018
Statistical analyses are an essential part of scientific research. Various procedures since the preparation of the experiment have an impact on the statistical procedures adopted. Therefore, a correct planning implies a precise analysis.

Monitoring and evaluating of slope stability for setting out of critical limit at slope stability radar

open access: yesInternational Journal of Geo-Engineering, 2017
Slope stability monitoring and evaluating play vital role in the risk management of open cast mines. Generally, Issue of slope failure occurs at open cast mines due to undisciplined mining, impacts of weather conditions.

Introduction to papers on astrostatistics

open access: yes, 2009
We are pleased to present a Special Section on Statistics and Astronomy in this issue of the The Annals of Applied Statistics. Astronomy is an observational rather than experimental science; as a result, astronomical data sets both small and large ...

Tau acetylation at K331 has limited impact on tau pathology in vivo

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
We mapped tau post‐translational modifications in humanized MAPT knock‐in mice and in amyloid‐bearing double knock‐in mice. Acetylation within the repeat domain, particularly around K331, showed modest increases under amyloid pathology. To test functional relevance, we generated MAPTK331Q knock‐in mice.

Association between lifestyle factors and suboptimal health status among Chinese college freshmen: a cross-sectional study

open access: yesBMC Public Health, 2018
Background Suboptimal health status (SHS) is the third state between good health and disease. SHS is the clinical or pre-disease status of psychosomatic disease and a major global public health challenge.

Comparison of Tsallis statistics with the Tsallis-factorized statistics in the ultrarelativistic $pp$ collisions

open access: yes, 2016
The Tsallis statistics was applied to describe the experimental data on the transverse momentum distributions of hadrons. We considered the energy dependence of the parameters of the Tsallis-factorized statistics, which is now widely used for the ...
