Arginine-vasopressin induces water reabsorption in collecting duct principal cells through the water channels aquaporin (AQP) 2, 3, and 4. Only the presence of these AQPs allows for short-term adjustments of plasma osmolality by arginine-vasopressin. How principal cells maintain the expression of the AQPs is unclear.

The vasopressin–aquaporin-2 pathway syndromes
2021Vasopressin is the key hormone involved in water conservation and regulation of water balance, essential for life. In the renal collecting duct, vasopressin binds to the V2 receptor, increasing water permeability through activation of aquaporin-2 redistribution to the luminal membrane.

Role of microRNAs in aquaporin 2 regulation
Current Opinion in Nephrology & Hypertension, 2022Purpose of review The current review aims to present the most recent achievements on the role of microRNAs (miRNAs) on the kidney function to stimulate research in the field and to expand new emerging concepts. Recent findings The focus is on the role of miRNAs in intercellular ...

Regulation of Aquaporin-2 Trafficking
2009Principal cells lining renal collecting ducts control the fine-tuning of body water homeostasis by regulating water reabsorption through the water channels aquaporin-2 (AQP2), aquaporin-3 (AQP3), and aquaporin-4 (AQP4). While the localization of AQP2 is subject to regulation by arginine-vasopressin (AVP), AQP3 and AQP4 are constitutively expressed in ...

Regulation of the water permeability of the apical plasma membrane in collecting duct principal cells is essential for the regulation of renal water excretion, and thus, the regulation of body water balance. The water permeability is partly regulated by trafficking of aquaporin (AQP2) containing vesicles between an intracellular reservoir and the ...

Aquaporin 2 Mutations in Nephrogenic Diabetes Insipidus
Seminars in Nephrology, 2008Water reabsorption in the renal collecting duct is regulated by the antidiuretic hormone vasopressin (AVP). When the vasopressin V2 receptor, present on the basolateral site of the renal principal cell, becomes activated by AVP, aquaporin-2 (AQP2) water channels will be inserted in the apical membrane, and in this fashion, water can be reabsorbed from ...

Expression of aquaporin 2 in human endometrium
Fertility and Sterility, 2006To study the expression of aquaporin-2 (AQP2) in human endometrium.Prospective clinical study.Hospital-based unit for gynecology and obstetrics and research laboratories.Healthy women with proven fertility who were divided into four groups according to LH peak.Endometrial biopsies were obtained from 34 women on cycle days LH+4 to LH+14.Localization of ...

Regulation of aquaporin-2 by RNA interference
2020MicroRNAs (miRNAs) are short non-coding RNAs that interact with 3'-untranslated regions of mRNAs. miRNAs modulate gene expression by regulating mRNA translation and provide novel insights into the complex regulation of protein expression and function. In this chapter, we describe the general features of RNA interference, identification of miRNAs, and ...

Repressive regulation of the aquaporin-2 gene
American Journal of Physiology-Renal Physiology, 1996Expression of aquaporin-2 (AQP2) is exclusively limited to kidney collecting duct cells, and this strictly limited expression could be mediated by transcription of the gene. We first examined AQP2 mRNA expression in many cultured epithelial cells derived from kidney.

Aquaporin-2 protein dynamics within the cell
Current Opinion in Nephrology & Hypertension, 2007Aquaporin-2 is an aquaporin water channel protein present at the apical membrane of kidney collecting duct cells and plays a key role in urine concentrating ability. Like other membrane proteins, aquaporin-2 undergoes dynamic processes within the cells: synthesized, targeted to the subapical region, exocytosed to the apical membrane, endocytosed ...
