A text-mining system for extracting metabolic reactions from full-text articles [PDF]

open access: yes, 2012
Background: Increasingly biological text mining research is focusing on the extraction of complex relationships relevant to the construction and curation of biological networks and pathways. However, one important category of pathway—metabolic pathways—

Engineering Bacterial Secretion Systems for Enhanced Tumor Imaging and Surgical Guidance

open access: yesAdvanced Materials, EarlyView.
This study presents a novel contrast agent platform, Streptavidin Associated Salmonella (SAS), for fluorescence image guided surgery. SAS selectively colonizes tumors and secretes streptavidin, enabling precise delineation of invasive tumor margins with prolonged signal retention.

Metabolic Engineering of the 5‐Aminolevulinate Biosynthetic Pathway in E. coli Improves Efficiency of Hemoprotein‐Based Biocatalysis

open access: yesAngewandte Chemie, EarlyView.
We have engineered the heme biosynthetic pathway in E. coli to develop an efficient cofactor supplementation system for hemoproteins. Through the incorporation of the heterogeneous C4 pathway, the engineered cells significantly increase the expression levels of active holohemoproteins and enhance the efficiency of whole‐cell and lysate‐based ...

EPS Production by Lacticaseibacillus casei Using Glycerol, Glucose, and Molasses as Carbon Sources

open access: yesMicroorganisms
This study demonstrates that Lactobacillus can produce exopolysaccharides (EPSs) using alternative carbon sources, such as sugarcane molasses and glycerol.

Dual‐Selective Terahertz‐Nanodisc Metasurfaces for Exploring Neurotransmitter Dynamics beyond Spectral Limitations

open access: yesAdvanced Materials, EarlyView.
Observation and detection of neurotransmitter dynamics in aqueous system has been hurdle for analytical fields due to its weak and reversible nature. A terahertz‐nanodisc metasurface which implements comprehensive detection over conformational change and selective sensing is introduced. Utilizing the THz regime photonics and biomimetic environment with

Genomic and metabolic instability during long-term fermentation of an industrial Saccharomyces cerevisiae strain engineered for C5 sugar utilization

open access: yesFrontiers in Bioengineering and Biotechnology
The genetic stability and metabolic robustness of production strains is one of the key criteria for the production of bio-based products by microbial fermentation on an industrial scale. These criteria were here explored in an industrial ethanol-producer

Systematic Design and Implementation of a Novel Synthetic Fold-Change Detector Biocircuit In Vivo [PDF]

open access: yes, 2015
Biological signaling systems not only detect the absolute levels of the signals, but are also able to sense the fold-changes of the signals. The ability to detect fold-changes provides a powerful tool for biological organisms to adapt to the changes in ...

DNA Sampling: a method for probing protein binding at specific loci on bacterial chromosomes [PDF]

open access: yes, 2009
We describe a protocol, DNA sampling, for the rapid isolation of specific segments of DNA, together with bound proteins, from Escherichia coli K-12. The DNA to be sampled is generated as a discrete fragment within cells by the yeast I-SceI meganuclease ...

The regulatory and transcriptional landscape associated with carbon utilization in a filamentous fungus. [PDF]

open access: yes, 2020
Filamentous fungi, such as Neurospora crassa, are very efficient in deconstructing plant biomass by the secretion of an arsenal of plant cell wall-degrading enzymes, by remodeling metabolism to accommodate production of secreted enzymes, and by enabling ...
